Amid my academic pursuits, I find it equally rewarding to dive into literary classics that provoke thought and challenge perspectives. My latest review of Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita explores its complex themes and narrative artistry. Check it out here: https://lnkd.in/d5KzHmy4 Balancing academic research with literature like this enriches my comprehension of human experiences and narratives. Tomorrow is the final seminar of the year for the Centre for Australian Literary Cultures (CALC): 'In conversation with Mark McGurl' Thursday 21st November, 4.30pm AEDT More info: https://lnkd.in/gF5C4ZTk Speakers: Mark McGurl is Albert Guérard Professor of Literature at Stanford University. His books include The Novel Art (2001), The Program Era (2009), which won the Truman Capote Award for literary criticism in 2011, and Everything and Less (2021), which was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award in Criticism. Joseph Steinberg is a Forrest Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Western Australia. He is nearing completion of his first book, a literary history of the rise of creative writing in Australian universities, titled The Program Goes South. Details: Mark McGurl has spent much of his career posing bold questions. What did it mean, at the beginning of the twentieth century, to reconceptualise the novel as a work of art? How has the novel’s institutionalisation – its re-housing on university campuses via the discipline of creative writing – determined its formal and thematic preoccupations? Most recently, he has written a book-length answer to what is, perhaps, his biggest question yet: what might the novel look like were we to see it from the vantage point of a multinational retail juggernaut? What place remains for literary fiction in the age of self-publishing, e-books, authorpreneurs and Adult Baby Diaper Lover erotica? Should our critical attention be captured by the beta intellectuals of autofiction, or the alpha males of popular romance? What, we might also ask, has this redefinition of the publishing landscape meant for comparatively minor literary ecologies such as we find in Australia? What space, if any, do multinational platforms leave for national literatures? And what might an initially self-published novel like Michael Winkler’s Grimmish (2021) signal to us about the shape of our literary moment?

As part of the 30th anniversary of Biuro Literackie, which I have led continuously since its establishment, we have prepared many exceptional books and events for our readers. One of the highlights is for sure the publication of the first collection of poems by Norwegian The Nobel Prize laureate Jon Fosse to be published in Poland! The selection “Pies i anioł” features over 50 poems from 1986–2016, showcasing Fosse as a poet drawing inspiration from the magic of fjords, dark forests, and the rugged landscapes of Norway. Elżbieta Frątczak-Nowotny’s translation masterfully captures the rhythm and depth of Nynorsk, offering readers a unique literary experience. This book is a journey into a world of fear, silence, faith and hope, where poetic and biblical words illuminate the path through darkness. I would like to express my gratitude to the author for granting permission to publish this volume and for approving its final shape. I would also like to thank Gina Winje, Winje Agency, and Book/lab Literary Agency for their fruitful collaboration. This is not the first, and certainly not the last book of a Nobel Prize laureate published in our small press. But this one brings me particular joy. I’m looking forward to welcoming the author in May next year, hoping he will honor us with his presence at the festival – the oldest literary event in Poland in terms of age, yet still the youngest at heart. #kultura, #culture, #literature, #festival, #kołobrzeg, #biuroliterackie, #artistic, #polish, #norway, #books, #translation

Literature plays a crucial role in shaping our understanding of the world and preserving our history. It is important to ensure that a diverse range of voices and perspectives are represented in literature to accurately reflect the richness and complexity of our society. This includes supporting and promoting stories from individuals of all backgrounds, regardless of their access to resources or education. By amplifying marginalised voices and sharing a wide range of experiences, literature can help foster empathy, understanding, and connection among readers from every walk of life. It is essential to create a platform for all voices to be heard and celebrated in order to create a more inclusive and equitable literary landscape. #Books #BookPublishing #Bookstagram #BookLists #DiverseAuthors #Reading #literature #activism #history #readinglist

#nobelprize How would I react to a reporter if I am awarded The Nobel Prize in literature? I am glad the world has recognized me for my literacy. I can speak, read, understand, and write. Ripley’s Believe It or Not, not all even among the most and best educated can do this. Why? Please read if you know how to read, understand if you can understand, and sign this before September 2024 for the United Nations António Guterres Summit of the Future in Manhattan. #sustainability. What is it? A primer: https://lnkd.in/eJQvnCa8. #OurCommonFuture https://lnkd.in/eaZe52sD. It is your choice, not mine.
How would you react if a reporter told you that you had been awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature? On 11 October 2007, a Reuters correspondent informed Doris Lessing that she had been awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. Lessing arrived in a cab at her home in north London, UK when the reporter approached her. Here she’s shown sitting on the steps outside her house just after hearing the news. Doris Lessing's body of work comprises around 50 books and spans several genres. Her writing is characterised by penetrating studies of living conditions in the 20th century, behavioural patterns, and historical developments. She was awarded the literature prize at the age of 88, making her the oldest person to ever receive the award. Read more about Lessing: https://lnkd.in/dP9iKxx
