When you coach you can grow all the people in your team. ( Even when you don't understand all the technical details of their work anymore. ) Ever felt like you need to catch up on all the tech and AI in order to be able to manage your team? This is a problem many people have early in their leadership career. The first tool we use in our 1:1s is mentoring. We are a couple of years ahead of where they are. We leverage our past experience to help people in the team. While our leadership career advances, things change: ⤴ the experience gaps grow ⤴ our team diversifies in scope ⤴ our team might become more teams Just imagine how in data, a head of data would manage data analysts, data scientists, data and ml engineers. How can a person be expected to keep up to date with so many fields.. AND lead? You no longer are a subject matter expert. 🚨 Staying only in mentoring mode might have unwanted side effects. Long ago, a colleague was more into the engineering side of data science. I advised her to go towards ML engineering. 😱 To me that was the logical next step. She was very excited about the idea. Later that evening I had a "panic attack". I couldn't tell if she really liked the idea because I, a person she trusted, suggested it. I didn't ask enough questions to help her identify her career goals. To still have effective 1:1s, you need to add coaching to your toolset: • you get out of advice mode • you focus on asking good questions • you help people discover their career goals • your aim is no longer to help people find solutions • your aim is to help people learn how to find solutions When you practice coaching, you also scale up your leadership. You will be able to lead almost anybody. Data can point out where we need to improve. Found a gap in strategic thinking? Tackle puzzles or strategy games to strengthen this area. Example: A manager struggles with public speaking, so they practice with VR presentations, slowly building confidence and skill. 📌 Our brains love rewards. Look at what tasks you complete eagerly and find out why. Enjoy completing challenging projects? Set a personal reward for tackling tough tasks. Example: If finishing a course feels rewarding, reward yourself with something small, like your favorite coffee, to stimulate dopamine and encourage learning. 📌 Stress blocks learning. Data can show when stress levels peak, suggesting when not to schedule learning. High stress before presentations? Schedule prep time well in advance to reduce pressure. Example: Notice team meetings are less productive on Monday mornings? Switch to a mid-week slot when the team is less anxious and more receptive. 📌 Tailoring learning to fit you is like having a GPS for your growth journey. Love podcasts? Find leadership podcasts for your commute. Example: Data shows you excel in small groups. It's easier to optimise a modest start than to begin with a perfect start. Starting is the hard part, so start small and get in the mix. You'll learn a lot and you'll realise you don't need to have it all figured out to begin. This philosophy is at the heart of High Risers' mentorship program, which has become a powerful force in advancing women in AI and Data fields. We didn't launch with a grand, all-encompassing program. Instead, we started small, partnering with a handful of industry leaders who shared our vision. From that modest beginning, we've grown to collaborate with 18 industry leaders, supporting over 30 women in their AI and Data careers. Our initial focus was simply on connecting mentees with experienced professionals. As we learned and iterated, we developed two distinct tracks: the Leadership Track for women aspiring to management and C-suite positions, and the Technical Track for those looking to upskill in specific areas like Data Science or AI Engineering. We didn't have it all figured out at the start, but our commitment to continuous improvement has led to impressive results. Today, 58% of our participants have secured employment or promotions, and 70% of mentees in the technical track have earned certifications in their chosen fields. Our journey shows that you don't need a perfect start to make a significant impact. We began with a simple idea and a willingness to learn and adapt. Soft Skills are the new currency in today's job market I never thought this day would come. I remember pitching to dozens of VCs back in 2014-2016 & so many of them would tell me, “If I were you, I would learn how to code.” They said this because programming was the most requested skill then, and if you knew how to program, you’d have an edge. Fast forward to today, AI can do most of the programming you need, and in the next few years, we will see a $1B company with a team of 10. Gone are the days when you needed buildings upon buildings of programmers to build a $1B company.
