At the end of January, Stephanie Bowker, Keji Mustapha and I organized an intimate conversation on lessons from startups that haven't gone according to plan.
Keji moderated a panel with Stephanie and I from Ourspace, Alexander Hipp from Beyond, and Felix Martinez from Seedcamp. We shared both founder and investor perspectives on what it’s like to live through the tumultuous journey of not finding Product-Market Fit.
We talked about:
💔 What it’s like to split up as cofounders
🔢 What signals indicate to investors that a startup is likely to be among the 90% that fail
🤯 The mental process of recognizing that the traction just isn’t there
⏭️ What it’s like to return investor capital, and either move on from the startup, or continue as a bootstrapped solo-founder
We invited a small group of 20 founders (both VC-backed and bootstrapped), investors, and folks from the London/Paris ecosystem for some real talk about failure and getting on the other side of it. The connection among that group reassured that these things are worth talking about.
Here's a pic that captures how that kind of connection felt. Also, clearly no one told me there was a color scheme for the event 🙈
If we were looking to take this conversation to another city to connect over these themes, where should we take it next?
