At home, we are taking part in the Big Plastic Count. Will you? A few days of keeping track of household plastic use and it will help campaign to get the UK government to put further regulations in place to solve the plastic problem; and push for a stronger Global Plastics Treaty Greenpeace UK https://lnkd.in/dDMQgvNG https://lnkd.in/e3ggC3kc

There is a 10-year plan in motion aimed at phasing out plastic bottle products on U.S. public lands, including all national parks. This is a continuation of a movement that started in 2011, when the parks service encouraged the 417 federal parks to end plastic bottle sales. As a result, 23 national parks, including the Grand Canyon and Zion National Park, ended bottled water sales. In their place, the parks installed free bottle-filling stations. As a result, nearly 2 million plastic bottles were removed annually from national parks and, subsequently, our oceans. However, in 2017, the International Bottled Water Association successfully lobbied the federal government to reverse this plastic bottle ban, spending $80,000 over a few months to do so. Then, in 2022, the U.S. Interior Department announced it would eliminate the sale of single-use plastics on public lands, which span nearly 480 million acres across the United States. This 10-year plan phases out plastics and helps keep our parks, rivers, lakes, streams, and oceans plastic-free! 💙

Irish Business Against Litter has conducted their annual litter survey, which found discarded single-use coffee cups at almost one-third of the 500 locations surveyed right across the country. IBAL have noted their concern at the potential delaying of the Latte Levy even further. “We believe this action is needed to stamp out a product which is out of step with the circular economy. Irrespective of how recyclable or compostable take-away cups are, these statistics show too many of them are ending up on our streets.” Looking at the results from the Plastic Bag Tax introduced in 2002, it is hard to see why the levy is continually being pushed back. The resistance from lobbyists was the same as it is today, and once the tax was introduced, there was an immediate decrease of over 95% in plastic bag litter. We need to see this change repeated in the single-use items sphere. Reusables are the only way forward and out of this mess! #circulareconomy #sustainability

As consumers, we have the right to call out businesses for wasteful practices. Recently, I received a box measuring 2.5 cubic feet from a large international company. The box was used to ship four smaller boxes that when grouped measure just 28% of the larger box. The remaining 72% was filled with over 50’ of inflatable plastic filler. This isn’t the first time seeing this, but 50’ of filler is simply too much to ignore. There is no excuse as boxes come in all sizes. Poor training in the shipping department is clearly highlighted here. Let’s do better and hold businesses accountable for their wasteful practices. If you know anyone in shipping, please forward this to them or repost it to your network. Together, we can make a difference. #sustainability #wastefulpractices #shipping #recycling

Many states are enforcing a plastic bag ban and charging shoppers a fee for paper bags. On the surface, this sounds like a great way to reduce plastic waste in our oceans, landfills, and foods. BUT…what does a paper bag fee have to do with a plastic bag ban? What is the real reason why governments are forcing grocers to collect this fee? Listen-in & hear the true motivation behind your state’s plastic bag ban and plastic bag tax. 🔗https://lnkd.in/etpMwZvk In Science & Love, ~ Dr. Renee’ Carr #PlasticBagBan #plasticVSpaper #microplastics #recyle #LossAversion
