The National Water Act (NWA)(Act No 36 of 1998) of South Africa helps to protect the wetlands in such a way that an individual/company need to apply for components that are within 500m of a wetland or 100m of a watercourse. #water #iwula #wetland #protect

The wetlands are a key ecosystem for biodiversity and here is a nice detailed explanation of many types of wetlands, what they are and also the benefits they bring to all of us.

Wetlands are key habitats for many species - including bats! They also have multiple ecosystem functions - including water storage and purification. HUMANS NEED wetlands, and yet we continue to treat them badly - diverting them, draining them and polluting them. We need a change in attitude! The ecologists KNOW this - but the engineers who work in resource development need to acknowledge the value of these types of habitats and work to conserve these sites. Good engineers already work with teams of ecologists to do this.

When reshaping cities for climate adaptation one must also have an eye for biodiversity opportunities. Read below on the importance of including a cityecologist to your projectgroup. For our project LIFE CRITICAL our cityecologist Sjoerd-Dirk Fiaschi-van der Est helped reshaping the desiging of our climate adaptive Wielwijkpark to limit the impact on biodiversity loss and provided opportunities to enrich the park. #climatechange #climateadaptation #protectingwildlife #biodiversity #ecology #ecologist LIFE Programme
🦔 🤸♂️ "I like to spotlight the similarities between city wildlife and people as they react similarly to adaptation measures," says Sjoerd-Dirk Fiaschi-van der Est. We recently spoke with Gemeente Dordrecht's city ecologist about the importance of incorporating biodiversity into urban regeneration and climate adaptation plans. Discover how we adapted our original plans for Wielwijk Park to ensure the protection of local wildlife and how this will impact the neighbourhood and the community in our latest interview! #ClimateAdaptation #UrbanBiodiversity #CitizenScience Bradford Council OnePlanet Research Center Dr. Özlem (S) B. Alongside the SUPERB project, REST-COAST, and WaterLANDS projects, we collectively provide scientific backing for the EU #NatureRestorationLaw. Explore our efforts to enhance ecosystem restoration across Europe, focusing on freshwater, forests, coastal areas, and wetlands in this new report: Restoring ecosystems under the Green Deal Call – Recovering biodiversity and connecting to nature. 🔎 This report examines the current condition of European ecosystems and the landscape of European biodiversity and ecosystem restoration policy, with a particular focus on the NRL. 🔗 Download link: https://lnkd.in/dPxZGSnW #freshwater #wetland #coastal #restoration #ecosystemrestoration #naturebasedsolutions #policy #Horizon2020 #EUGreenDeal European Commission NetworkNature EU

Is your organisation using nature based solutions? 🌿 These solutions are exactly as they sound - they use nature and natural processes as solutions to diverse socio-environmental issues. For example, many Wildlife Trusts employ natural flood management processes, to protect, restore, and mimic the natural functions of catchments, floodplains and the coast to slow and store water, reducing flood risk. There's plenty of other examples too, from ensuring green, biodiverse spaces to boost human well being, to carbon removals from protecting and restoring peatlands. Are you working with Nature-based solutions too, or interested in how they can be funded through carbon and biodiversity credit schemes? We'll be at the Second Conference on Nature-based Solutions using Carbon and Biodiversity Credit Funding – a University of Lincoln organised event, in partnership with The Wildlife Trusts and IEMA. 📅 Dates: 17-18 July 2024 📍 Location: University of Lincoln 👉 Full Agenda & Tickets: https://lnkd.in/eYBfzspi #NatureBasedSolutions #ClimateAction #Biodiversity #Sustainability

Check out our latest video, "What is Bird Monitoring?" 🎥 Bird monitoring is crucial for tracking ecosystem health, as birds serve as key indicators of environmental change, biodiversity, and habitat quality. By studying their populations and migration patterns, scientists can detect shifts caused by climate change, pollution, and habitat loss, helping guide conservation efforts in the Coastal Corridor and worldwide. 🦉

That's interesting! The idea that bison can help fight climate change is a new one for me. According to a study by researchers at Yale [NDTV], a herd of just 170 bison can store an amount of carbon dioxide that's equivalent to taking nearly 2 million cars off the road for a year. It highlights the importance of wildlife conservation in maintaining healthy ecosystems. Bison act as natural grazers, and their grazing patterns contribute to healthy grasslands which store more carbon dioxide than other ecosystems. While this is a promising finding, it's important to note that this is a single study and more research is needed to fully understand the impact of bison on carbon sequestration. To kickoff #NationalOceanMonth, the White House announced three national strategies to advance conservation and protection of our ocean, including the National Aquatic eDNA Strategy which outlines three main goals to help aquatic eDNA research reach its full-scale potential: (1) Coordinate across sectors to facilitate integration of aquatic eDNA into decision making (2) Build capacity, infrastructure, and the research enterprise needed to employ aquatic eDNA technology at scale (3) Advance coordinated aquatic eDNA observations to aid assessments in U.S. waters Read the National Aquatic eDNA Strategy here: https://lnkd.in/di-CXR9F And check out the other strategies released for Ocean Month!
