“The combination of convenience and incentive in Oregon means nearly all beverage containers are collected with other beverage containers, helping protect food-grade materials from contamination, and returning them to their highest and best use, which is often a new bottle or can.” ~Jules Bailey, OBRC President & CEO https://lnkd.in/g3stxFba The Hill

I absolutely love fabulous examples of how people respond when some location discontinues #recycling (usually of #glass) for dubious reasons! Here, when the local municipality discontinued glass recycling, a couple of residents took matters into their own hands. The couple in this 👇 article decided to figure out how not to landfill glass. Their solution? Make root beer. Then reuse all kinds of different bottles to package it! Reusing glass is one of the lowest-CO2 impact ways to package something anyway--and better than recycling. What an awesome, affirmative step to both send a message (people want to recycle glass--and practically everything else for that matter) and then do something about the municipality's misguided decision! #sustainability #chooseglass #circulareconomy https://lnkd.in/e_s4RWrW

Experienced Business & Environmental Attorney I Well-Being & Sustainability Advocate I International Speaker
As a business and environmental lawyer, I am always sensitive to how we can advance smart environmental initiatives and policies, while supporting responsible businesses to grow and support our economy. This recent study by CRI shows that there is no definitive evidence that state Deposit Return Systems, aka “Bottle Bills” negatively impact sales. Many in the beverage industry oppose deposit return systems primarily because of the costs of compliance and risk of enforcement. However, Bottle Bills have long been the source of reliable, clean-stream, quality recyclable materials, and deposit initiated container systems actually work - they have about an 80% return rate, whereas curbside recycling lags in the 30-35% range, approximated nationally. I have advised buisness clients on recycling, Bottle Bill and environmental matters for 25 years. I am the former Solid Waste Program Counsel for the NYSDEC, where I oversaw all bottle bill matters in the State of New York. I am seeking to assist new business clients at this time with their recycling needs as many states are expanding their deposit return systems and adding recycling content requirements and/or limitations on plastics. #bottlebill #bottlebills #recycling #sustainability #environmentallawyer #climatesolutions #packagingregulations #plastic #depositlaws #PCRC #labeling #circulareconomy #zerowaste #conservation #climateaction #ESG #compliance #womeninlaw #womenlawyers #leaders https://lnkd.in/ehnPmcCJ

🗣️ DEPOSIT RETURN SYSTEMS WORK! New research from Eunomia Research & Consulting shows that an expansion of The Beer Store deposit system with retail and depot collection is the most cost-effective way to reach 90% beverage container recovery in Ontario. Comprehensive recycling systems are key to keeping beverage containers out of the environment and in the circular economy. Without a deposit return system in the province, the people of Ontario are losing. Read our latest news release on the findings to learn more: https://lnkd.in/eVkwyaKt

Generally, the higher the deposit value, the higher the return rate 👇 Our fact sheet examines the different reasons why countries, states, and provinces with a Deposit Return System (DRS) achieve higher collection rates for drinks containers ♻️ ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eWGkwY8K
More than 8 in 10 Massachusetts voters support modernizing the state's beverage container deposit return system (#DRS, aka #bottlebill). Upgrades like increasing the deposit from 5¢ to 10¢ & adding coverage to non-carbonated beverages - including bottled water - are overdue. Just Zero Kirstie Pecci https://lnkd.in/dUYdGRH9

Kegs are quite possibly the most sustainable form of drinks packaging. They are effectively reusable, oversized beer cans, which are collected and reused around 165 times over 30 years on average before being recycled for further use. Yet the small print on the European Commission’s draft Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which aims to cut packaging waste by 5% by 2030 and 15% by the end of 2040, could actually discourage the very use of kegs for beer transportation and sales in favour of multiple smaller units - as kegs would effectively not be counted as sales packaging in the draft’s current form, and therefore wouldn’t count towards reuse targets. MEPs are due to vote on this proposal on October 24th and representatives of the industry, who fully back the Commission’s aims, are rightly concerned about the way it goes about the solutions 👇 #europeofcities #europe #sustainability #packaging #kegs #beer #packagingwaste #europeancommission

While they say that K-cups are not going away, Keurig is testing K-rounds which will hopefully become an more environmentally friendly alternative. After settling a 2018 lawsuit over how recyclable the cups really were, the company has worked to find an alternative. If you are unable to recycle the k-cups in your community, a mailback is being launched in late 2024, so be on the lookout to improve your recycling habits. More information is in the link below. This is Waste Reduction Week in Canada and today is Plastics Thursday. I wanted to share the following video with you. Plastic bottles play a vital role in a circular economy, which means they can be recycled over and over again. So, the next time you're out and about, hold on to your containers and take them back to Return-It for recycling. This simple practice ensures that many used beverage containers are given a new life in the recycling stream, where they can be transformed into fresh new beverage containers. It's a small yet impactful way to contribute to waste reduction and promote environmental sustainability. Take a moment to watch the video below and discover more about the recycling process of plastic beverage containers. Let's all play a part in making a difference! https://lnkd.in/e4pGs8Xj
