When it comes to 'tearing up the traditional biotech playbook' -- we are in the conversation. Nature published an article discussing how bigger and more expensive science requires more extensive collaboration and new funding opportunities. "... it is possible for startups to partner with core facilities at universities in the area to rent time on certain equipment, such as sequencers. One does not need to be in a big city to have this sort of arrangement. The Huck Institute at Pennsylvania State University, for example, runs 12 core labs and offers services for a fee to local companies." Scientists Can Be Entrepreneurs Too! In the scientific community, research and academia are often seen as the natural paths forward. But why stop there? Science can be the bridge between innovation and real-world impact, and biotechnology is the perfect example of that. Take the story of Andreas Laustsen-Kiel from the Technical University of Denmark. Hailing from Tanzania, Andreas recognized snakebite as a critical medical issue. He didn’t just stay within the boundaries of academia—he took it a step further and founded VenomAb, which aimed to develop the world’s first recombinant antivenom against snakebites. By identifying a societal need and demonstrating compelling data, Andreas not only won over investors but also built a sustainable biotech business. Fast forward, and today, he has founded 8 biotech companies! So, how can researchers follow in his footsteps? Identify Societal Problems: Research has the power to change lives. Spot a problem that your work can solve. Commit to Both Fields: Academia and business require dedication. Build a solid reputation in both. Master Communication: Investors need more than just science—they need to see the impact. Be clear, concise, and understand their needs. Collaborate: The right partners and co-founders can accelerate your journey. Embrace New-Age Tools: Stay ahead by leveraging AI and other cutting-edge technologies. Be Humble and Work Hard: Entrepreneurship is a marathon, not a sprint. To my fellow MSc and PhDs—don’t limit yourself to academia. Explore, innovate, and maybe, just maybe, you’ll find yourself at the intersection of science and business. Let’s make an impact together! 🚀 #Biotechnology #Entrepreneurship #ScientificInnovation #TechForGood #BiotechStartups #ResearchersInBusiness #STEMInnovation #PhDLife #ScienceAndBusiness #TechEntrepreneur #AIInScience #FutureOfBiotech #Innovators #ImpactfulResearch #LifeSciences #AcademicEntrepreneur #InnovationLeadership #BiotechEntrepreneur #ResearchToImpact #Startups #DeepTech

𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗮𝗽: 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗟𝗮𝗯 𝘁𝗼 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 Innovation in science has the potential to transform industries, improve lives, and shape the future. However, many groundbreaking discoveries often stay confined within the lab, unable to reach the broader market where they can make a real impact. Why is that? One of the main challenges in bringing science to market is the 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Many scientists focus solely on the technical aspects of their work, overlooking the importance of product development, market needs, and business strategy. Additionally, 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘀, 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗵𝘂𝗿𝗱𝗹𝗲𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮 𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗲𝘁 often stall the transition from innovation to real-world application. But it doesn't have to be this way. To overcome these barriers, we need to: 1. 𝗙𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 between scientists, entrepreneurs, and industry leaders, ensuring that research is driven by real-world needs. 2. Provide 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 to researchers, equipping them with the skills necessary to navigate commercialization. 3. Develop 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀, encouraging private and public investments that support the journey from lab to market. 4. Streamline 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀 to make it easier for scientific innovations to pass through compliance and reach consumers. 5. Cultivate a culture that values 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵; research that actively aims to solve real-world problems and is market-ready. By addressing these challenges, we can accelerate the path from discovery to market, ensuring that scientific breakthroughs are not just celebrated within research communities but are also 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲, 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗳𝘂𝗹, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 in everyday life. Let’s work towards a future where science in the lab seamlessly flows into innovations that benefit society. Bringing science to the market is not just the responsibility of researchers, but of the entire ecosystem. Let me know how you think we can solve this problem!? #InnovationToMarket #TranslationalResearch #ScienceAndEntrepreneurship #BringingScienceToLife #BiotechStartups #LabToMarket #Commercialization #ScienceForImpact #ScienceEntrepreneurs

Excited to unveil our latest interactive map on 2023 biotech funding by location (within the article below), showcasing real-time investments across the globe. After crunching all of the biotech startups that attracted funding in 2023 in Crunchbase, mapping them reveals the continued resilience of the U.S. biotech industry despite significant headwinds. China-based companies got more funding on average, but fewer companies there won funding last year. European firms are showing a strong capacity for attracting high-value investments, but the average funding amount was notably lower than their counterparts in the U.S. and China.
Analyzing the biotech funding landscape in 2023: U.S. still out front
