Meet the recipients of our 2023 Strategic Investment Fund (SIF) for sustainable storytelling! WildSpring Guest Habitat is a small, eco-friendly resort in Port Orford. Everything they do has been designed to have a minimum impact on the environment, and all their choices were made with three questions in mind: Will it be beautiful in a natural way? Will it help protect the environment? Will it make guests feel cared for? The WildSpring Guest Habitat received funding to take photos and videos, and share out a blog story highlighting their sustainability initiatives. These include EV charging stations free to guests, development and operations focused on sustainable practices, carbon neutral operations, sustainable building practices, and water and energy-saving practices. The SIF is an annual program that allows us to support our coastal tourism partners to help the long-term resiliency of tourism on the coast. New paper out with Jeff Marion (who recently retired!) called "Trail Sustainability Broadly Defined". While trail sustainability has often been narrowly defined as accommodating visitation while minimizing environmental degradation, in this paper we emphasize a broader definition that encompasses four interconnected domains: managerial, resource, social, and economic sustainability. Today BEFS, supported by Historic Environment Scotland, launch the new Sustainable Investment Tool (SIT). This free resource enables visualisation around decision making for projects and investment in built heritage. Developed by the sector, the SIT can help organisations as well as community and interest groups with heritage assets to explore sustainability, enabling greater resilience for Scotland’s places. The structure the SIT provides can aid communication of the value heritage assets (and their related projects) can bring across a wide range of indicators – ultimately broadening the understanding of heritage value and heritage potential. The ability of the sector to demonstrate its continued value and impact across a changing landscape, and the importance that investment in built heritage and the historic environment has for Scotland, has never been more pressing. The SIT is released by Built Environment Forum Scotland (BEFS), with the support of Historic Environment Scotland, on behalf of the Our Place in Time - Built Heritage Investment Group (BHIG) and supports the new strategy for Scotland’s historic environment - Our Past, Our Future.
