"Aside from the social, ethical, and environmental imperatives to act, travel and tourism businesses should also consider the impacts of climate crises on their operations...applying principles of climate justice will enable the industry to better position its investments and futureproof its relevance through empowering and centring the communities and ecosystems upon which travel experiences are based." A timely report from The Travel Foundation, the University of Waterloo, Tourism Cares, the Center for Responsible Travel (CREST) and Cuidadores de Destinos, and Expedia Group, highlights the role the travel industry must play in delivering a just climate transition, and why businesses should be engaging in this conversation. As a coastal tourism organization, the report reinforces the urgency of impacts that we foresee on the coast as frequent and severe weather events increase, and the actions we are taking to encourage sustainable travel and strengthen our communities. 📗 The highly anticipated and much needed Climate Justice in Tourism Report is now available! 💡 Co-authored by Bobbie Chew Bigby, PhD, Jeremy Smith and Freya Higgins-Desbiolles, and supported by Cuidadores de Destinos, The Travel Foundation, Tourism Cares, Center for Responsible Travel, and the University of Waterloo, this report "highlights the importance of integrating climate justice into the travel and tourism industry’s response to climate change. It explores the many reasons for looking at tourism through a climate justice lens and highlights the risks of not doing so. In particular, it calls on the industry to prioritize two key considerations: fair action on emissions and fair action on adaptation and resilience." Climate justice recognizes that the effects of climate change disproportionately impact marginalized communities worldwide. These communities often face the greatest environmental threats despite contributing the least to the crisis. As the tourism industry seeks climate solutions and strives for net-zero emissions, sustainable tourism conversations and actions must extend beyond mere carbon counting. It's crucial to acknowledge the industry's collective responsibility to address these inequities, ensuring that both emission reductions and support for adaptation and resilience efforts are equitable and fair. We're excited to help bring this report to the RISE Travel Institute community, and will list the report as one of our required readings for our programs going forward. We express appreciation for the collaboration of critical tourism scholars and industry leaders in developing this report. It is our privilege that our Founder and Executive Director Vincie H. was able to contribute as a reviewer in this important initiative. Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/dWYHz7_f 📅 Don’t miss the launch webinar on July 31st at 8am EDT to delve deeper into the findings and recommendations. https://lnkd.in/dpfQuZUE #climatejustice #climatechange #tourism #sustainabletourism #justice #justclimatesolutions

🚨 Attention OTAs and Travelers! 🚨 It's time to address the elephant in the room: manipulative reviews hurting small businesses and misleading real travellers. We've noticed a troubling trend: ❌ Fake negative reviews on budget-friendly options ❌ Suspiciously glowing reviews on pricier alternatives ❌ Valid feedback buried or ignored This manipulation steers away from great, affordable experiences like our self-guided audio tours. OTAs: It's time to step up! Implement stricter review verification. Prioritize authentic experiences over profit margins. Travelers: Stay vigilant. Together, let's build a more honest travel community. Your real experiences matter. #HonestReviews #FairTravel #tripadvisor #viator #getyourguide #UvamaiNicheTourism #thereisnolimittoexplore #experienceyourself #Travel #Tourism #ResponsibleTravel #SustainableTourism #ReviewAdvisor https://lnkd.in/gq579U-b

On this world tourism day I am approaching the topic with a much broader and deeper perspective thanks to so many people including Amanda Ho, O'Shannon Burns, Juliet Kinsman, David O'Sullivan, Anna Pollock, Dianne Dredge, PhD and Megan Epler Wood. Some reflections I have (none of which are novel, but there are people on my feed who aren’t part of the tourism economy, so in the interest of starting conversation) T: take only pictures 📸, leave only footprints 👣. BUT, do you have permission to take pictures of cultural heritage and daily activities (especially involving children), and are your footprints staying on designated paths? O: own your actions. Are you being loud and obnoxious in public places? 🗣️ Are you contributing to overtourism by visiting popular locations during peak season? U: use the time before you embark on your adventure to learn about where you’re going. What are the local customs, what is the history of the place and its people? What are the current environmental, social and economic challenges it’s facing? 🌏 R: read up 📚on the places you can visit, eat, and stay that are off the beaten path. Where do the locals eat? Are there craft or farmers’ markets? Can you hire a local guide for a day? I: Introspection. Has your tourism experience deepened your connection to a place, its people, or the land? If not, what actions can you take to change that? S: Story. When you get back home, what will be the story you tell of this trip? Did you take the time to see the place from a viewpoint other than behind your camera? Did you inhale deeply and linger over meals? Did you practice the native language? M: Make your trips an opportunity to find your “why.” (Not business or frequent flyer miles, sorry!) Deep down, what drives you to travel? And can this align with the new paradigm in the travel economy? Food for thought… #tourism #worldtourismday #acrostic

How tourism and travel move us towards peace? The act of travel from one place to another in search of something new, relaxing, educational, inspiring, challenging is a catalysator for personal and community engagement. It has the power to build connections with other people and places based on interest and sharing. The most basic meaning of tourism is to build relationship and peaceful exchange between each other. How did it get lost in the past years? #WorldTourismDay celebration is today with the theme Tourism and Peace. #Peace, I believe, starts within each person and reflects in their actions towards others and other places. So, the urgent question is how can we inspire travellers and all stakeholders again to work with the most profound values of tourism? Travel experiences have the potential to influence people`s choices in all segments of their life. This is the power we should harness to ignite changes. Those choices should be based on respect, attention and care towards all the places and people that travellers visit and meet with. We need to (re-) educate people how to visit a place that allows them to fully be there and understand the importance and authentic values of that place. There are many ways how to do that, but product and destination developers alongside other stakeholders must change business approach to facilitate. Based on my views e.g. presented briefly in my post yesterday (read it 😊) activities that foster deep connection between visitors and the environment have the capacity to empower people to become stewards of the place, nature, people, protective measures and projects of the place. Once people feel a more meaningful relationship with a place, they make more responsible decisions that supports that place. This means not only environmental, but also social support. This way, through unique travel experiences, we enable people to become active agents for peace and for better life for everybody. #regenerativetourism #tourismforpeace #forceforgood #impact #empowerment #nature #peaceagent #travelbetter
