The Paralympic Games are a celebration of human achievement and diversity. Yet, as we enter the final week, it’s disappointed to see barriers to accessibility and inclusion persist. One significant issue is the lack of widespread television coverage. While the International Paralympic Committee offers a free #YouTube channel, many countries have restricted access due to exclusive broadcasting rights. This is a missed opportunity to promote inclusivity and showcase the incredible talents of Paralympic athletes. How can we truly embrace accessibility and inclusion if we can’t even watch the competitions? WHAT THE OLYMPIC GAMES SHOULD REMIND US ALL Every four years it happens again: the Olympic Games - A world spectacle of elite athletes from every country competing against each other. I remember myself as a kid, glued to the television, admiring the ice skaters and acrobats. And even today, I will peek in over the next few weeks to see the highlights of the games. But for me, the Olympics are more than just a sports event—they are the culmination of global unity. Here is why: 🕊 Being international competitors doesn't mean being enemies. We can compete in a respectful and peaceful manner and even be friends.  🕊 We are all in the same boat. Everybody competes under the same equal rules and regulations.  🕊 Global harmony is possible. Different cultures come together and live in peace despite political and cultural differences.  🕊 International bonding is happening behind the scenes. The games bring people together from all around the world at such an eventful moment promoting a deep connection. 🕊 Stories are written. Every four years, athletes from all backgrounds astonish us with their greatness and inspire us to be better. Let’s see which country will surprise us this year, let’s see which athletes will set a new world record. Fighting time difference: Australia and Paris 2024 Games As Australia gears up to follow the Paris 2024 Games, the challenge of time zone differences looms large. However, a novel initiative by the Australian Olympic Committee promises to overcome this hurdle and recreate the festive, collective atmosphere of the Games. The "Olympics and Paralympics LIVE" project is set to bring communities together in a way that echoes the shared spirit and celebration of the Games. At its core lies the transformation of local clubs, schools, universities, municipal councils, and community groups into mini fan zones, mirroring the excitement and communal atmosphere of the classical fan zones found at the Games themselves. A true sense of belonging and shared enthusiasm as fans come together to watch the events. These gatherings will create a festive environment where fans can celebrate (or commiserate) together. This collective experience is crucial for maintaining the social fabric that sports events like the Olympics and Paralympics traditionally weave among their audiences. The simplicity of accessing "Olympics and Paralympics LIVE" through a straightforward registration on the NOC website creates a positive feedback loop for the Australian olympic committee: more visibility, more registration, more appeal and more promotion of their national sponsors. Watching and celebrating the achievements of their domestic athletes together will reinforce the already existing strong sense of national pride and community spirit. For us, these collective viewing experiences remind us that the Games are not just about the competitions but also about coming together to support our athletes and celebrate their accomplishments. The values that underpin the Olympics Games are excellence, respect, and friendship. According to the organizers themselves, these are elaborated as follows: 1. Striving for excellence and encouraging people to be the best they can be. 2. Demonstrating respect in many different manners: respect towards yourself, the rules, your opponents, the environment, the public, etc. 3. Celebrating friendship, which is quite unique to the Olympic Games – an event that brings people together every few years. The goal of the Olympics movement is to contribute to building a peaceful and better world by educating youth through sports, practised without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit, which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play. In light of the above lofty ideals, values, and principles, it is therefore both saddening and shocking that the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games featured a parody, to put it mildly, of The Last Supper. Reactions have ranged from it being in poor taste, mocking, disrespectful of Christianity, to outright blasphemy. The chagrin experienced by many was compounded when the organizers issued an apology that was half-hearted, insincere, and fell short of expectations. First, it was a gratuitous attack on a faith that is loved, respected, and cherished by close to a quarter of the global population. Second, there was also a strong element of hypocrisy and double standards, almost as if Christianity was perceived as a weak and easy target to be attacked, on the false premise of free speech, as consistency and responsibility respectively were thrown out the window. Third, it was clearly against the values espoused by the Olympics organizers themselves, in particular on respect, friendship, solidarity, and inclusivity. May this be a teachable moment for all of us to truly learn, internalize, and practise the values of the Olympics. It is a crucial and meaningful signal in the sport and, in general, in global society.
