The COVID-19 Pandemic alerted and made us more aware that many of our Caribbean Islands are being sustained by the Tourism Industry. We have heard our governments setting the framework for the Blue and Orange Economies. It is with urgency that these economies must be engaged. Our developing states need long-term goals to sustain the economic climate that we are facing.

With Chinese New Year just around the corner, “the largest human migration on the planet” has already started.  Chunyun (春运; pinyin: Chūnyùn), is the 40-day period when Chinese people head home to celebrate the Lunar New Year, which is also referred as Spring Festival, with their families. In 2024, it stared on 26 January and will end on 5 March, and is set to be the biggest ever as it is the first ‘normalised’ one after the lifting of Covid restrictions. A record 9 billion trips are expected to be made within China during the chunyun travel period, according to the Ministry of Transport of China. While the travel surge brings a boost to sectors like transport, catering and hotels for a short period, economists said China needs to focus on other long-term issues in 2024. In the period from May to August 2024, the key origin markets searching for trips to the Caribbean exhibit diverse trends with notable year-over-year growth and shifting rankings compared to 2023. The United States emerges as the top origin market with a substantial volume of searches, while Argentina and Brazil are experiencing remarkable growth (79% and 47% respectively) compared to the previous year. 🛫 In 2023, non-traditional markets led the #aviation recovery in the Americas. Central America, with the exception of Belize, showcased the most robust recovery, where passenger traffic and capacity reached 150% of 2019 levels, propelled by tourism enhancements and infrastructural developments such as new routes at Palmerola International Airport. In contrast, major South American countries like Argentina, Chile, and Peru struggled, remaining 10-30% below 2019 figures due to ongoing economic and political issues. However, smaller markets such as Guyana, Colombia, and Ecuador surpassed 2019 levels by 18%, benefiting from favourable economic conditions and tourism policy improvements.
