Blitz Blog – Epilepsy and Transition from Pediatric to Adult Care Welcome back to the Blitz Blog. It happens every day – children become teens and teens become adults. For most teens, transitioning to adult health care is not terribly difficult. Their parents or their pediatrician often help them find a new adult PCP. But, for those with complex medical conditions, like epilepsy, that path is more difficult. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) created a health care transition toolkit for healthcare professionals. The goal is to help them learn more about the unique health considerations that youth with epilepsy have when transitioning to adult health care. If you are a parent of a child with epilepsy, you may want to provide this info to their PCP and their child neurologist. - Here is the link to the AAP’s Epilepsy Resources for Health Care Professionals: Health Care Transition (aap.org). - More info on supporting health care transition in the medical home is in the 2018 AAP clinical report: Supporting the Health Care Transition From Adolescence to Adulthood in the Medical Home | Pediatrics | American Academy of Pediatrics (aap.org). - The American Epilepsy Society has info on health care transition and recommends that children with epilepsy start working on their transition plan when they are around 10 to 13 years old. Would not be shocked if my field goes nearly extinct, pediatrician doctors with 11-15 years of education and training replaced by those with two year degrees. Payment to hospitals and healthcare centers for a pediatrician’s work is 30% less than for adult medicine. Hospitals, eyeing margins, are already shutting down pediatrics https://lnkd.in/ejYcJdj2 and women’s health https://lnkd.in/eyBa-nTQ to replace with higher reimbursed and higher margin service lines. Another way to increase margins is to reduce #operating #costs by replacing existing #labor (doctors) with cheaper replacements, like done by this #privateequity owned practice: https://lnkd.in/eQV4qeg6 “Thousands of North Texas patients could lose their pediatricians, as Children's Health, the area's largest pediatric provider, gives up management of 16 primary care clinics. MD Kids Pediatrics will take over 13 of the locations, but a spokesperson confirmed it operates under a #business model that relies more heavily on nurse practitioners and that some pediatricians will be let go.”
