Four months after Steward Health Care shuttered its hospital in the Nashoba Valley area as part of its bankruptcy process, health care officials are considering opening a new, stand-alone emergency room in the region. UMass Memorial Health said it plans to build and operate the emergency department, which is also expected to offer certain imaging services. “We believe this solution can fill the community’s critical needs and address their primary areas of concern,” the hospital group said in a statement. https://ow.ly/lEBR50ULrPc

In the world of emergency medicine, every second counts. But before Apprise's Healthcare Capacity System, finding space for patients when a hospital was overcapacity meant time-consuming phone calls to other facilities, often delaying critical care. Advance care plans are also often shared by fax, including between residential aged care facilities, GPs and hospitals, which introduces risk and privacy implications. According to recent the future regional population shares show that Northern Virginia will be home to well over a third of the state’s residents (37% share or 3.4 million people), followed by the Richmond (18% or 1.64 million) and Hampton Roads (17% or 1.59 million) regions. This is also demonstrated by the rates of population change over the decade of 2020-2030, with Northern Virginia projected to grow by 11% while the non-metro areas are expected to shrink . The latest projections also highlight the shifting age composition in Virginia, with the statewide share of the older adult population (those aged 65 and above) showing continued growth from 12% in 2010, to 16% in 2020, to 19% in 2030 and beyond. A picture is worth a thousand words. Many states still receive very low scores on the Leapfrog patient safety ratings. Why do we allow healthcare facilities to operate despite these low patient safety scores? Hospitals with a patient safety score of C or lower have an over 80% higher fatality rate due to preventable medical errors. These hospitals are endangering patients, while our regulators seem to look away. "The Leapfrog Group recently contracted with the Johns Hopkins Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality to update its estimate of deaths due to errors, accidents, injuries and infections at “A”, “B”, “C”, “D” and “F” hospitals. Overall, an estimated 160,000 lives are lost annually from the avoidable medical errors that are accounted for in the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, a significant improvement from 2016, when researchers estimated 205,000 avoidable deaths. The analysis also found that D and F hospitals carry nearly twice the risk of mortality of A hospitals. Over 50,000 lives could be saved if all hospitals performed at the level of A graded hospitals."
