Interesting event. It is commendable that reform is prioritized alongside the restoration of public trust and the transformation of policing culture. Strong leadership integrity is crucial for improving the relationship between law enforcement and the communities they serve. Addressing current challenges requires innovative approaches to crime prevention, particularly through community engagement and technology. These efforts should consistently focus on community participation, accountability, and transparency. By fostering collaboration and adapting to the evolving needs of society, the police can position themselves as trustworthy partners in maintaining public safety. The future of policing will hinge on these three foundational pillars: integrity, innovation, and collective responsibility. Boosting the number of police officers in line with the police-to-public ratio is essential to alleviate fatigue and reduce the pressure on current officers. Other pressing concerns include addressing knife and hate crimes, as well as fostering healthy relationships among individuals from various communities and ethnicities.

Last week, footage was released of the final moments of U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Roger Fortson’s life. Once again, we see the crushing violence of this racialized society and the horrific injustice of police brutality. We lament. We acknowledge the trauma, PTSD, anguish, fear, and anger this story can bring up. So first, we want to ensure our BIPOC community is taken care of, heard, and seen. And then, all together, we lament. We find ourselves looking directly at injustice and its violence, and we lament. We lament a life taken. We lament a Black man’s life taken. We lament a young Black man’s life taken. As bridge builders, we don’t stop at lament. We take our lament and foster transformation. We have to cultivate a holy imagination and actively work towards creating equitable systems. We have to be willing to ask ourselves and decision makers tough questions. What responsibilities lie with us? What can we do to make sure people are safe in their own homes? How can we create systems where everyone is treated fairly? How can we ensure lethal force is the absolute last resort? How can we better value life? What do we need to do for there to be liberty and justice for all? We lament. And then we move onward to leverage, leveraging our positions and resources for healing and restoration. Be color brave instead of colorblind. Ask questions. Be willing to investigate the history of policing in the U.S. and in your state. Accept historical truths and present realities. Engage in your community by voting, initiating community policing efforts, and looking at your city’s resources and budgets and what might be reallocated. Attend community meetings where discussions can happen and lead to change. Support mental health initiatives for your community and for law enforcement officers. Listen to the experiences of families who have endured police brutality. Speak up when police brutality occurs. Be dedicated to figuring out a different way of policing within your local context. Look at what other cities have done that have yielded positive results. Give yourself space to weep and mourn. It doesn’t have to be this way. Say Roger Fortson’s name. Hold his family and friends in prayer. And know that transformation begins with you. #bethebridge #lament #rogerfortson

Another great article posted by the Director of Second Look Network at The Sentencing Project regarding use of clemency powers to address excessive sentences. The number of older people in State & Federal prisons is increasing faster than any other age group. How could anyone claim that the point of incarceration was to incapacitate the truly dangerous when there are more people older than 55 in US prisons (165,000) than there are people in the high-crime range of 18-24? Geriatric healthcare in prison is both disgraceful and expensive. It costs on average, 3x more to incarcerate an older person than a younger one. Governor Andy Beshear could help alleviate the excessive costs mass incarceration has incurred on Kentucky as a proponent for second chances, and providing additional resources to protect public education and access to affordable healthcare-basic rights to the citizens of the Commonwealth. #SecondLookLaws #FreeKarenBrown  

Great to see those working in sport and physical activity in UK prisons coming together for this session. This would be great in Australia. We need more opportunities for sharing and collaboration whilst highlighting best practice in such a specialist area. But the question I pose is who is best placed, willing and motivated to bring us together and lead this space? Academia? Government? Correctional leaders? Sport for Development leaders? Sports leaders and bodies? The sport for development sector and inclusive sports space continues to grow and evolve at a great rate with so many stakeholders and contributors involved. Are we all on the same page and working together to improve the sector and build our credibility. Who are the leaders driving excellence? Gives much food for thought.
