Biodiversity and climate are fundamentally interconnected. Climate change is a large and growing driver of biodiversity loss – and together with renewable energy, restoring biodiversity is a critical tool for reaching our climate targets. Restoring biodiversity to our ecosystems can deliver over one third of the action we need to avoid the worst impacts of climate change by 2030. But while there are established metrics to account for renewable energy’s carbon reductions, there’s never been an easy way to measure our actions to halt and reverse biodiversity loss. That’s why we made one. Check it out and give us your feedback at orsted.com/measuringnature. #WorldOceanMonth #Biodiversity #RenewableEnergy

On this #EarthDay, it’s crucial to recognize not only the beauty of Washington State’s biodiversity but also the urgency of addressing the impacts of climate change on species like the #orcas that inhabit the #SalishSea. The orcas, also known as killer whales, are not just magnificent creatures; they are a symbol of the delicate balance of marine ecosystems. Warmer waters disrupt their food sources like #Chinooksalmon, while ocean acidification affects the entire marine food web. Simple steps like reducing energy consumption, using public transportation or carpooling, and supporting renewable energy sources can collectively make a significant difference in reducing #greenhouse gas emissions. Blue Carbon vs. Green Carbon
Blue Carbon vs. Green Carbon: Understanding Their Roles in Climate Change Mitigation. Blue carbon refers to the #carbon captured by the world's oceanic and coastal ecosystems, such as #mangroves, #seagrasses and #saltmarshes. These #ecosystems are incredibly efficient at absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and storing it in plant biomass and sediments, often for thousands of years. In addition to their climate benefits, #bluecarbon ecosystems protect coastlines from #erosion, support marine biodiversity, and help sustain fisheries. On the other hand, #greencarbon is found in terrestrial ecosystems, including #forests, #grasslands, and #soils. Trees and plants absorb carbon dioxide during photosynthesis and store it in their tissues and the soil. Forests are significant green carbon reservoirs, playing a crucial role in the #globalcarbon cycle and supporting terrestrial biodiversity. Both blue and green carbon are vital in #mitigating climate change by acting as carbon sinks, absorbing more carbon dioxide than they emit, thus helping to regulate the global climate and maintain #ecological balance. By conserving and restoring these ecosystems, we can enhance their capacity to #capturecarbon, #protectbiodiversity, and build a more #sustainablefuture. #ClimateAction #EcosystemConservation #Sustainablility

Leading the Charge for Biodiversity: Eurelectric’s new guide, developed by WSP in the UK, is a game-changer for the renewable energy sector. As we transition towards a renewables-dominated electricity system, we must ensure we are protecting our environment and thinking sustainably. WWF confirms that renewable-led decarbonisation can lower risks to biodiversity by 75% and revert 50% of land loss induced by climate change. The Power Plant Guidebook outlines 12 key principles for environmental protection, offering a roadmap for integrating biodiversity into renewable and grid projects. Understanding the Impact of Carbon Emissions on Oceans and Marine Life 🌍 The increasing levels of carbon emissions are not only warming our atmosphere but also having a profound effect on our oceans. As more CO2 is absorbed by seawater, it leads to ocean acidification, which can be detrimental to marine life, especially species with calcium carbonate shells and skeletons like corals, mollusks, and some plankton. This change in ocean chemistry can disrupt marine ecosystems, affecting the food web and leading to a decline in biodiversity. Furthermore, rising ocean temperatures and acidification contribute to coral bleaching, threatening coral reefs which are vital for marine biodiversity and coastal protection. We must take urgent action to reduce carbon emissions and implement sustainable practices to protect our oceans and the myriad of life they support. Together, we can make a difference by advocating for policies that promote renewable energy, reduce fossil fuel dependence, and protect marine habitats. #ClimateChange #MarineLife #OceanConservation #CarbonEmissions #Sustainability #SaveOurOceans #EnvironmentalImpact #RenewableEnergy #Biodiversity #ClimateAction

🌎🔥 Climate change - key driver of biodiversity and nature loss. Together with a consumption shift to renewable energy, the restoration of biodiversity is a critical approach to reach (our!) climate targets. This green discourse can deliver a major proportion of the action we need to avoid the worst impacts of climate change by 2030 (which is not far). Also, a holistic approach to environmental conservation can serve as a competitive advantage (read more): https://lnkd.in/d5DFmjtA #Biodiversity #RenewableEnergy #ENERY #Sustainability

Blue carbon credits are a type of carbon credit that specifically pertains to carbon dioxide captured and stored in coastal and marine ecosystems, such as mangroves, seagrasses, and salt marshes. These ecosystems are highly efficient at sequestering carbon, often outperforming terrestrial forests in terms of carbon storage per unit area. By preserving, restoring, or enhancing these blue carbon habitats, projects can generate credits that can be traded in carbon markets. This not only provides financial incentives for conservation but also helps combat climate change by maintaining critical carbon sinks and promoting biodiversity. The development and regulation of blue carbon credits are essential for ensuring their credibility and effectiveness in mitigating global carbon emissions. #bluecredits #carboncredits #climatechange #carbondioxide
