Ørsted is promoting 2 #offshore #wind #farms in the German North Sea: 1) Borkum Riffgrund 3 will host 83 Siemens Gamesa wind #turbines and have an installed #capacity of 913 MW. 2) Gode Wind 3, with 23 Siemens Gamesa wind #turbines, each with a capacity of 11 MW.

The first Siemens Gamesa SG 11.0-200 DD wind turbine has been installed at the 913 MW Borkum Riffgrund 3 offshore wind farm in Germany. Located approximately 72 kilometres off the coast of Lower Saxony, the Borkum Riffgrund 3 offshore wind farm will feature a total of 83 Siemens Gamesa wind turbines, each with a rated capacity of 11 MW. The project's first wind turbine was installed by Seaway7's newbuild Seaway Ventus. The installation will also be carried out in equal parts by Wind Osprey from Cadeler. Borkum Riffgrund 3 is jointly owned by Ørsted and Nuveen Infrastructure. This important milestone for Borkum Riffgrund 3 follows shortly after the successful delivery of the first power from the 253 MW Gode Wind 3 offshore wind farm, which Ørsted and Glennmont Partners from Nuveen are building simultaneously with Borkum Riffgrund 3. Both Gode Wind 3 and Borkum Riffgrund 3 sites are located close to Ørsted's operational offshore wind farms, Borkum Riffgrund 1 and 2, and Gode Wind 1 and 2. The two additional wind farms will almost double Ørsted's installed offshore wind capacity in Germany to approx. 2.5 GW. In the German offshore wind auctions in 2017 and 2018, Ørsted was awarded the rights to build Borkum Riffgrund 3 with bids of EUR 0 per MWh - a first for offshore wind. Once the offshore wind farm has been commissioned in 2025, offtake agreements totalling 786 MW have been entered into with Amazon (350 MW), BASF (186 MW), Covestro (100 MW), EHA Energie-Handels-Gesellschaft mbH & Co. With approximately 7,000 turbines generating 7.2 GW across land and sea, more than 60% of the Danish electricity consumption is covered by the wind and sun. 📈 Since the early 1990s, Denmark has pioneered the development and implementation of offshore wind technology, with several large-scale wind farms installed in the North Sea and Baltic Sea. Wind turbines have since become highly efficient and cost-effective, with the newest offshore models reaching up to 15 MW in size. Today, the Danish wind industry employs around 33,000 people and is home to some of the world’s largest and most innovative offshore wind farms such as Kriegers Flak, which is the first offshore wind farm to have grid connection to two countries. BASF & Vattenfall Partner Vestas for Wind Turbines   BASFY and Vattenfall recently inked supply and service contracts with Vestas for 112 wind turbines of the type V236-15.0 MW. The installation of transition pieces (TPs) is about to commence at Vineyard Wind 1, America's first large-scale offshore wind farm. Beginning next month, DEME Group's jack-up vessel Sea Challenger will begin placing TPs at 17 monopile locations in lease area OCS-A 0501. The campaign will continue through June 2024. The units are being manufactured by Spain's Windar Renovables, which won the contract in 2019. The first of 62 transition pieces arrived at the Port of Avilés in December 2022. DEME Group Offshore US is responsible for the transportation and installation of the units. In addition to TPs, DEME Group's wind farm installation vessel Sea Installer has installed ten wind turbines so far at the offshore construction site located about 15 miles (approximately 24 kilometres) off the coast of Massachusetts. The first GE Renewable Energy's Haliade-X 13 MW wind turbine was installed at the site in October 2023 and the offshore wind farm produced its first power in January 2024. A month later, five of the planned 62 units were delivering energy to the New England grid, generating 68 MW of clean energy, enough to power 30,000 homes in Massachusetts, according to the developers of the project, Avangrid and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP). 1.4TWh generation p.a. for a 532MW wind farm = 30% capacity factor. 30% is not high, compared to other offshore (or some onshore) wind farms. But it is a good signal that offshore wind farms are getting mainstream, similar trend as the onshore wind farms a decade ago. Next = Class II or III offshore WTGs!
