This Wednesday marked my six-month milestone at Rights and Brands, officially ending my test term (It seems that they still want to keep me). I've enjoyed every damn moment, and it feels great to work with amazing brands in a company where I can be myself and my ideas are valued + I get to work with fantastic clients and awesome colleagues. Here are some key takeaways so far (The last 5 ones I learned during our sales meeting in Norway) 1. Behind the best brands, there is always a story. It can also be a story of band, designer etc. We love our brands. 2. We are here to help our customers open up new markets and discover new target audiences for their excellent products through licensing. When our customers succeed, we succeed 3. We continuously strive to evolve and discover new ways to help our customers and proprietors succeed even further. 3. Licensing offers nearly countless opportunities for success to those who want to be pioneers and stand out from the crowd. Think and dream big. 4. Recently I’ve seen many posts like this. Now it is time for me. I am thrilled to announce that starting in April I joined… La Sportiva Mandala users. Shoes from this Italian brand have been with me since I started climbing outdoors. Initially, I went for Miura and Solution, partly inspired by Adam Ondra's unconventional use of the Miura on his left foot and Solution on his right during the first ascent of Silence, the world's first 9c route. Both allowed me to progress quite nicely, enabling me to climb over 500 routes across Europe, including 7a in my first season — a goal I set, according to SMART rules (living example that it works) at the season's outset. As I delved deeper into modern indoor climbing, I transitioned to the Otaki, which offered a better fit for indoor boulders. Interestingly, despite feeling less comfortable with the heel hook than Solution, Otaki still allowed me to climb my most challenging outdoor route, where a good heel hook was key. As I think of returning to outdoor climbing, I'm eager to try something new. La Sportiva's cutting-edge… no edge technology, promising more precise footwork, caught my eye, and I'm excited to see where it takes me. Stage six of the Vuelta a Espana (the Tour of Spain, one of Cycling's three Grand Tour events) began 𝙞𝙣𝙨𝙞𝙙𝙚 𝙖 𝙨𝙪𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙢𝙖𝙧𝙠𝙚𝙩 with the cyclists actually riding down aisles lined with groceries and even up an escalator before exiting onto the roads to officially get the stage underway. If the goal of sports marketing is to create memorable and authentic activations between a sports property and its sponsor brand, this one wins the prize. While It's not realistic to lift this as a best practice directly (I don't foresee LeBron James dribbling through the produce department any time soon), there are three great lessons here to apply to any marketing partnership. 𝟭. 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝗠𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲. With the landscape of sports and advertising becoming increasingly crowded, it's more important than ever to develop creative, fresh, share-worthy content to maximize the value of your investment. Don't be content doing what's always been done before. 𝟮. 𝗧𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗮 𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆. Find a way to showcase your brand in the context of the event. "It feels like they are in a bubble and have no need to include us." ⛵ Barcelona is currently hosting one of the oldest and most prestigious sporting events: The America’s Cup. And although I’m gutted that the Italians got kicked out in the semi-finals, I’m excited to be watching the (first ever!) women’s team race in this event. The sports(wo)manship and the performance of the athletes are truly impressive. 💪 But, it took a while until I connected to the event. Because although I've always loved sailing and everything that has to do with the ocean, the America’s Cup felt distant, not relevant, and elite. And I’m not alone in feeling this way. As one of my local friends put it: “It feels like they are in a bubble and have no need to include us.” And this is exactly where the importance of building an emotional connection between brand and audience comes in. From a marketing perspective, the America’s Cup does a fantastic job when it comes to international coverage, how efficiently they manage their social media accounts (visual storytelling on point!), and how they offer big advertising platforms for their sponsors. ⭐ But I think they missed the chance to build a true connection with the people who live here in Barcelona—and might not be well-versed sailing enthusiasts (yet). One might say that this has never been the focus of the America’s Cup, but I disagree. Because I think every brand needs to build an emotional connection with their audience to stay relevant and memorable. And I want to believe that Barcelona is part of their audience. I think the key in building an emotional connection with your audience is to create an experience that make people feel included, valued, and part of something bigger. 🤝 Some brief ideas of how this could have been done better, in my opinion: sharing stories of how the teams (athletes and organization) connect with the city beyond the races, incorporating locals and their stories in the communication, creating more touchpoints across the whole city, education more around the races (rules, race reviews), and making the event feel more accessible (e.g., invitations and free entries for residents, after-work sailing sessions).
