Natural disasters, such as hurricanes, tornadoes, and blizzards, may force you to evacuate your home or shelter-in-place at short notice. It is important to know what to do in case of an emergency well before disaster strikes. If you are an older adult living in the community, you may face some challenges during an emergency. For example, you may have mobility problems, or chronic health conditions, or you may not have any family or friends nearby to support you. Support services that are usually available, such as help from caregivers or in-home health care and meal delivery services, may be unavailable for a period of time. In addition, older adults may experience challenges that come with advanced age, such as hearing or vision problems or cognitive impairment, which may make it difficult to access, understand, and respond to emergency instructions. You or the person you care for can be prepared for emergency situations by creating a plan, reviewing or practicing it regularly, and keeping an emergency supply kit. Please reach out to GSSSI at 413-781-8800 for any questions about where you can go in your community in the event of an emergency. We are available from 8:00am to 5:00 pm. #gsssi #greaterspringfieldseniorservices #communitytransitions #eldercare #seniorcare #love #caregivers #aging

Community Organizations Urged to Prepare as Emergency Shelters Amid Rising Severe Weather Events: As severe weather events become increasingly common, the expectations placed on community organizations to serve as emergency shelters are rising. A recent "Risk Radar Report – Severe Weather" by Church Mutual reveals a significant public sentiment: 82% of Americans believe that facilities such as houses of worship, schools, and nonprofits should be prepped for severe weather emergencies. The necessity is underscored by the fact that 84% of Americans would be adversely affected if these organizations failed to provide services during such times, with many having no alternative shelter, leading to potential financial and emotional distress. However, transforming into an emergency shelter isn’t without challenges. Organizations face considerable liability risks if they don’t adequately prepare or fail to offer essential services during crises. Poor planning can lead to tragic incidents on the property, loss of donor support, and a decline in public trust. To combat these issues, the first step involves collaborating with humanitarian organizations like the American Red Cross and consulting with insurance agents to ensure proper coverage and compliance with local housing regulations. Moreover, organizations must ensure their facilities are safe and well-stocked with essential supplies like food, water, and first-aid kits. Planning should also encompass security measures, housekeeping strategies, and clear admission policies to ensure the safety and wellbeing of those seeking shelter. By effectively addressing these risks and demonstrating their readiness to convert into shelters, community organizations can reinforce their commitment to serving and protecting their communities. #Catastrophe #Property #Liability #Claims #Insurance

There ya ha it folks... Heros doing what heros do! Sadly, this is exactly the type of compound tragedy, in which rescuers can become additional victims, and it is far too common. In certain situations, the data show, more people are killed trying to rescue others than are killed in the initial accident. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration recently examined reports for fatal accidents and found that when multiple deaths occurred, the majority of the victims were rescuers. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health previously reported that rescuers account for more than 60 percent of fatalities when rescue personnel are requires. Across different types of first responders, the similarities in strategy are striking. First responders have extensive and recurring training, proper protective equipment, and coordinated teams with clear chains of command. They gather as much information as possible, focus on maintaining awareness of the situation, have procedures and a culture that allow them to study and learn from past incidents, and they mitigate risks as much as possible before attempting to rescue or assist victims. Even with all of these safety strategies, trained responders still face substantial risks. Those risks are greatly increased for untrained rescuers. This is exactly the reason safety experts agree: If you witness a tragedy, contact experienced first responders as soon as possible, and keep other people away from the hazard. Do not act instinctively or impulsively. That is to say, if you do try to help or attempt a rescue, first evaluate the risks and understand your limitations—especially in situations involving enclosed spaces, gasses and chemicals, swift water, electricity, and moving traffic. In these situations, rescuers are at extreme risk of becoming additional victims.
