At MICCAI 2013, a panel of experts discussed the future of MICCAI once segmentation and registration is solved. They were kind of joking about the made-up headline that MICCAI won't be accepting any segmentation papers anymore, because the problem is consedered solved. I think we are still a few years away from claiming that, but the progress we've made as a community towards that goes within the last 10 years is just remarkable. Something that didn't seem possible, because the problem is too complex now just seems a matter of time. And I think Total Segmentator is the next steps from general network architecture (U-Net), to training framework (nnU-Net), to extremely comprehensive pre-trained models (Total Segmentator). Very curious to see what comes next.
