I’d like to take a minute and reflect on the incredible impact that committee work has had and continues to have on the Virginia Transportation Construction Alliance (VTCA), and more so, the industry as a whole. Things are always changing and evolving. As a result, challenges, issues, unintentional consequences, whatever the case may be, an intentional look into the impacts are critical to forward progress. These committees exemplify the true spirit of collaboration. Whether it's addressing industry challenges, or shaping and re-tweaking specifications and policies, the work of these committees often goes quietly unnoticed by most people, yet the benefits are felt throughout the Commonwealth by all. The reality is that they are the heartbeat of progress and transformation. So…, a heartfelt thank you to the passionate individuals who dedicate their time, energy, and expertise to VTCA’s committees. Your commitment is the driving force behind the positive impact we as a group make in the transportation arena. I might add, interested in being a catalyst for change and contributing to the future of Virginia's transportation landscape? Explore VTCA’s committees, engage with peers in the industry, and be a part of keeping Virginia moving. There is important work yet to be done.

It all comes down to the PIDCs mission statement on the side of the company truck. Sometimes, thoughts and intentions are so obvious they are hidden in plain sight. A Unifying Component. Being someone who can meet the client as well as the contractor and tradesmen where they are at. Being able to work with both to get the best outcome for the owner, contractor, and ourselves both personally and as a company. Understanding that there will be challenges along the way, meeting schedule, staying on budget, having to think outside of the box when working on historically unique buildings, relying on years of experience with everyone on the team. Empowering people to speak up and share. If you are the only one speaking, you are not learning ~ President Lyndon Johnson What accomplishments / Success are you most proud of after 5 years at PIDC? My journey into construction started in 1997. I was attending Wentworth and was in the Architectural Engineering program. My freshman year project was to draw up plans as if I were the architect of The First Church of Christ, Scientist. Fast forward 25 years later, I was installing the state of Massachusetts first 3 door elevator inside that same church. This elevator would and is now helping provide accessibility from their underground parking garage, exterior plaza, to the church's auditorium. Being able to work on a Landmark building within the city of Boston and leaving your own mark. Providing a unique service that is actually helping people. Top-down building construction using the Liftbuild system in Chicago - I spend a lot of time thinking about how we can make construction safer: can we develop a solution that reduces the number of large crane lifts, or can we minimise works within deep excavations or confined spaces, or can we manufacture precast offsite rather than stick-building? Considering high-rise construction, my initial thoughts are “you could never build a high-rise without a tower crane”. Turns out I was wrong! The Exchange tower is a 16 storey building which is being built top-down using the new LIFTbuild system. Each floor is built on ground, and lifted into place. It significantly reduces the fall hazards and work required around suspended loads, and makes it possible to build a high-rise mostly from ground level. Could this be something we see more of in the high-rise construction industry, or perhaps even in other applications? #safety #engineering #safetyinconstruction https://lnkd.in/geKk-2FY
