My inbox is flooded with messages from people asking for advice on how to write a successful SPARK/TC application; as Connect Ambassador for Clifford Chance, I am always enthusiastic in telling those interested in these amazing opportunities about how to put your best foot forward when applying. But, I will always be speaking from an *applicant’s* position; above all, I will always encourage applicants to speak to recruiters and take their perspective, to create connections themselves to drive their success…
… which is why I think this video is an absolutely excellent resource for anyone who plans to apply to any of Clifford Chance’s opportunities. Presented by Toby Horner - Assoc CIPD, this video concisely relays and explains the key aspects that separate a *good* application from a GREAT one, and all the tips that I give to applicants myself! Throughout my career as a lawyer in Brazil, I've encountered numerous challenges that have shaped me into the professional I am today. Here are three significant challenges I overcame and how they contributed to my growth and success:
1️⃣My First Internship at Porto & Dal Pozzo 👩🏼💻
My first major challenge was during my internship at the renowned law firm Porto & Dal Pozzo, a partnership that no longer exists but remains influential in my career. This experience was my initial exposure to legal processes, where I witnessed court proceedings and drafted my first legal petition. It was a steep learning curve, but it laid the foundation for my legal expertise. Notably, it was here that I met two pivotal mentors, one of whom became my business partner years later. This internship was my gateway into the legal world, teaching me the fundamentals and igniting my passion for law.
2️⃣Leading the Legal Department at the Ansellmo Imoveis - Real Estate Company. 🗂️
My second major challenge was being hired to lead the legal department at the largest real estate company in the city. This role required me to overhaul all contract templates, reorganize the customer service department, and create detailed reports for each legal case, as the company had no system for tracking judicial processes. This was a massive undertaking, but it taught me invaluable lessons in legal management, process optimization, and leadership. Successfully transforming the legal operations of such a large entity was both challenging and rewarding, significantly enhancing my organizational and strategic skills.
3️⃣Becoming a Partner at Fideles & Franzoso. 🤝
The third major challenge came when my firm was contracted by the city's largest transportation company in 2015. This opportunity was a game-changer, propelling me from an associate lawyer to a partner at Fideles & Franzoso, with a retainer contract five times larger than I was accustomed to. This sudden shift was both challenging and exhilarating, pushing me to expand my capabilities and manage a significant client account. The experience was incredibly rewarding, cementing my status as a partner and setting a new benchmark for my career.
These challenges have not only honed my legal skills but also reinforced my belief in the power of perseverance and adaptability. They have prepared me to tackle future challenges with confidence and determination.

In just a few weeks, I’ll officially wrap up my first 365 days at Dentons LuatViet—and what a year it’s been! When I tell people I work at a law firm, their immediate reaction is usually, “Oh, so you’re a lawyer?” If you had asked me a year ago, I probably would have thought the same. But here I am, thriving as a Business Development Executive—a role I didn’t even know existed at a law firm when I started.
Truth be told, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect when I began as a Business Development Intern. A law firm seemed like a world far removed from my background in business. Yet, only one month into the role, I was promoted to Executive, all before graduating! A huge thank you to my supervisor and our managing partner for believing in me and giving me the chance to take on more responsibility so early on.
The legal industry has a way of keeping you on your toes—complex, multi-layered, and far more dynamic than I anticipated. It’s been a crash course not only in law but also in understanding a wide variety of industries. Every client comes with a unique set of challenges, whether they’re in tech, finance, or manufacturing, and this diversity has sharpened my business acumen in unexpected ways.
But the biggest revelation? The people. Working with lawyers has completely shattered the stereotypes I had. Yes, they’re some of the hardest-working, sharpest minds you’ll meet—but they’re also some of the most hilarious, friendly, and down-to-earth people I’ve had the pleasure to collaborate with.
As I look back on this whirlwind of a year, I feel incredibly lucky to be part of such an amazing team at Dentons LuatViet. Here’s to year two—more learning, more growth, and hopefully just as many surprises along the way!
as spring flowers are blooming...it's summer camp time for summer associates.
excellent recent content covers what #summerassociates need to do in order to succeed. snaps for Elizabeth (Betsy) Munnell's perennially fun read "best practices for summer associates: blunt, but invaluable." so good.
flipping the table (not like Teresa 😂), musings on what senior lawyers can and should do to facilitate a smooth 🏕 experience.
for simplicity, slotting majority of 2024 summer associates to Gen Z and senior lawyers to Gen X. understanding the differences between these generations enhances mentorship and #collaboration:
(a) communication styles: Gen Z values direct, frequent, and clear communication. embrace technology for quick updates and feedback to keep them engaged.
(b) flexibility & work-life balance: unlike the “always-on” mindset of many Gen Xers, Gen Z prioritizes work-life balance. respect their time and encourage a healthy balance to boost productivity and morale.
(c) purpose & impact: Gen Z associates are driven by purpose and seek meaningful work. highlight how their tasks contribute to larger goals and societal impact to keep them motivated.
(d) learning & development: Gen Z appreciates continuous learning opportunities. offer regular training, diverse experiences, and constructive feedback to foster their growth.
I'm ready for the 👏 back...why do we [senior lawyers] have to accommodate a slacker/lifestyle mindset?
2 considerations, happy to share more:
competitive advantage: firms that are known for their supportive and adaptable work environment attract top talent, at ALL levels.
market relevance: Gen Z’s unique perspective can provide valuable insights into younger clients' needs and preferences, helping firms to better tailor their services.
