To #degree or not to degree? That is the question. Personally I feel for a purely technical role, I don't know that a degree is needed or worth it. I know many organizations don't really care in today's landscapes for certain roles. But what about #Network #Automation roles? A lot of these roles seem to be filled with experienced #software #engineers who know #networking or network engineers who learned software engineering. For those who are network engineers first looking to move into an network automation (development) position, is a software engineering degree useful or is it more important to display portfolio projects? What do the top companies who embrace network automation in this industry actually care about when hiring for these roles? Comment your thoughts below.

Tuesday Tip - This one is for all the Software Engineers currently competing in a very competitive market! In a client-led software engineering market, companies drive the demand for specific skills and expertise based on their evolving needs. In 2024, this trend is becoming more prominent, with clients increasingly seeking engineers who can deliver tailored solutions quickly. This means there's a growing emphasis on specialization in areas like cloud services, AI-driven automation, and cybersecurity. As a result, software engineers need to be highly adaptable, often customizing their skill sets to meet the unique requirements of each client, leading to a dynamic and fast-paced job market where client needs dictate the direction of innovation. #softwareengineering

I fully concur, and it's crucial for traditional network engineers to enhance their skills in development, particularly in Python, CICD, API, and API security. This upskilling is essential for scaling the foundation and creating a future-proofed business and application driven network that can adapt to fundamental needs while maintaining control. What's everyone else opinions? #networking #automation #ai #Softwaredefined
Building networks, clouds, and community; helping engineers grow; advocating for privacy and simplicity
Network engineering is not “going away.” Network engineering is not less important than it was yesterday, last year, or even a decade ago. But there still seems to be a gap somewhere. There are fewer folks interested than we need. We need more folks who want to work as full-time network engineers, and more folks with network engineering skills diffused within the larger IT community. More of both is the right answer if we’re going to continue building large-scale systems that work. The real lack of enthusiasm for learning network engineering is hurting all of IT, not just network engineering. How do we bridge this gap? We’re engineers. We solve problems. This seems to be a problem we might be able to solve (unlike human nature). Let’s try to solve it. https://lnkd.in/ejUvJGM3

If you're coming from a Software Engineering or similar position in a larger corporate environment and want to jump into start-ups... Bin off the words 'Information Technology' or I.T. Seriously, eradicate it. Keep it far, far away from your CV, cover letter, LinkedIn, emails, everything. I.T is printers, routers, windows installations, monitors... Software Engineers build digital products and experiences that solve problems. I know it's small but for people looking to jump into start-ups for the first time, the perception people have of you, and whether you 'get it' is SO important. The assumption for Software peeps with 'I.T' all over their CV is that you don't.
