🌐 By fostering collaborative networks, we continue to advocate for the rights and well-being of women and girls impacted by conflict. From July 16 to 18, 2024, the OSCE Gender Issues Programme held its 3rd exchange on enhancing protection and response to violence against women and girls in conflict. This flagship initiative gathered prominent women activists and leaders from Ukraine, Georgia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Over three transformative days, participants engaged in discussions on sustaining long-term support for GBV survivors, ensuring it is inclusive and needs-based. #WINGenderEquality #EVAWG Lara Scarpitta

🌍 Today on International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict I stand in solidarity with survivors. The OSCE is on the frontline of this fight, striving to prevent all forms of violence against women and girls in conflict. I am proud to announce that we are continuing our vital partnership with @WAVE for the third consecutive year under the #WIN project! Since 2022, WAVE and the OSCE have joined forces to address conflict-related gender-based violence, working tirelessly with women’s NGOs to build capacity and share good practices. 👉 https://lnkd.in/dzpgJSWn This builds on our 2020 unique research on how women have been directly affected by conflict and experiences of VAW. Our findings showed that conflict and conflict-related violence against women have long-lasting consequences. Violence experienced by women in conflict has different forms, intensity, and consequences than in other contexts. Legal and policy responses need to take these different realities into account. 🔎 Check-out our data here: https://lnkd.in/dkwM-RJY. We also continue to support Ukrainian women activists in their fight against VAWG in conflict by empowering and supporting grassroots organizations who are providing essential physiological support and protection to the survivors. As we move forward, our focus remains steadfast on preventing and responding to gender-based violence in conflict and post-conflict settings. Together with international and national partners, we aim to ensure that those affected by the devastating impacts of war receive the support and protection they need. #OSCE #WomenAgainstViolenceEurope #GBV #WINGenderEquality #endCRSV #EndRapeInWar #Partnership #HumanRights #WomenEmpowerment #ConflictResolution

At Soroptimist International of Europe, we represent over 30.000 members. We are urging for the inclusion of rape in the new EU policy. This #WomensDay, it is imperative to reflect on the recent Miss South Africa controversy. A young black African woman has been subjected to relentless and vicious xenophobia and afrophobia This kind of violence must be confronted. As Audre Lords aptly puts it - we do not live single-issue lives or fight single-issue struggles. So, as we mark #WomensDay in South Africa we must remember that our struggles for justice and our struggles against gender-based violence, racial discrimination, xeno/afrophobia, and other forms of violence faced by women in South Africa are intersectional and intertlinked. The attack against Chidimma is a critical reminder that safeguarding women’s rights and achieving true equality requires us to tackle all forms of oppression holistically, from a perspective of dignity, compassion, and justice. The sensationalistic media reporting has only drawn stigma and further harm towards her and her family. Nationality-based, migration-based, and documentation related discrimination is a serious issue that demands our urgent attention. https://lnkd.in/dp92MtSr #womensday #womensrights #genderequality #nondiscrimination #enddiscrimination

An English version of the summary of our report on policies to prevent violence against women in New Caledonia and French Polynesia has just been released by the French SAI, the Cour des comptes. In those two territories, the situation is worse than in most other French regions. The report provides a summary of the policies in place and the progress expected by a stronger partnership between local authorities and other actors to fight this violence and provide better care for victims. Professor of Modern Slavery Law at King’s College London; Human Rights Barrister at One Pump Court Chambers; Parliamentary Advisor
Sexual Violence and the Stigmatisation of Victims in Ukraine: Thank you European Human Rights Advocacy Centre (EHRAC) and partners, including La Strada Ukraine, for sharing the publication of your important new Shadow Report, presented to the Group of Experts on Action against Violence against Women and Domestic Violence (Council of Europe) entitled “Sexual Violence and the Stigmatisation of Victims”. As you have aptly summarised: “Our shadow report identifies challenges in the legislation and practices of the criminal justice system in Ukraine, with a focus throughout on the negative impact of gender-based myths and stereotypes on all phases of the criminal justice process, and the stigmatization of victims. These challenges constitute discriminatory barriers preventing access to justice for victims, and highlight the pervasive scepticism and unwarranted disbelief of the accounts of women and girls who experience these crimes. We offer recommendations…on several priority areas which, if successfully implemented, would serve as a basis for further reform over time, to bring Ukraine fully in line with its Convention obligations.” To this I add: The stigmatisation of women and girls following sexual violence is a matter of grave concern throughout the world. I am sure that a number of your findings will resonate far beyond the geographical reach of your report and that your expert recommendations - including that the focus should be on consent-based considerations and not whether force was used - will provide highly valuable insights to others involved in addressing ways to combat the stigmatisation of victims of sexual violence across a broad reach of the globe. As you have importantly recommended in your report: “That the Supreme Court of Ukraine consider issuing…guidance on interpreting and applying Articles 152 and 153 CCU in line with Istanbul Convention and other international standards, building on and developing existing guidance in the Court’s judgments. This guidance should reflect the recent legal amendments that shift from a force-based to a consent-based definition of rape, and include an explanation of the flaws in the previous understanding of rape, to move away from victim-blaming and reliance on stereotypical assumptions about the behaviour of both the victim and the perpetrator. The new understanding of rape aims to eliminate these biases, thereby ensuring justice without disadvantaging the victim.” Thank you for your leadership work in this field.

Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict. Today, and every day, every woman should be able to live in a community, in a country and in a world free from any form of violence regardless nationality, race or religion. Sexual violence in conflict continues to be used every day as a tactic of war, with devastating impact for women and girls for the rest of their lives. The support to every survivor should be the priority as well as taking every perpetrator to justice ending impunity. #sexualviolence #sexualviolenceinconflict #war #weaponofwar #conflict #genderbasedviolence #CRSV #SGBV United Nations UN Women

Today, on International Women’s Day, we celebrate women and focus on their human right to live a life free from discrimination and violence. Although today is a day of celebration, many women still face violations of their rights. The Samos Closed Controlled Access Centre (CCAC) is a degrading environment and poses additional risks for women. Women make up 21% of the CCAC’s population, while 54% are men and 25% children.* They face discrimination and gender-based violence. Women report to us that they feel unsafe in the CCAC, afraid to leave their rooms and are at risk of verbal violence and sexual harassment. Today we celebrate the strong, passionate and resilient women we work with every day, who care for each other, their families and communities, creating safe spaces together. We continue our work organising women’s groups at Alpha Land and Alpha Centre, acting as a safe and trusted route to other organisations and services. We also continue to advocate for the respect of their rights, including access to basic services, safe spaces and privacy in the Samos CCAC. *Data from UNHCR. #InternationalWomensDay
