Day 10 of Teacher Tipmas: Don't forget about the school secretaries and custodians! 🧑🏫🧹 ✨ Tip of the day: Befriend and be kind to the secretaries and custodians of the school. 🫧 Kirsten Link, German teacher at Mascoutah High School, reminds us not to forget about the people behind the scenes at a school, such as the secretaries and custodians. They may not always be as student-facing as the teachers, but our schools surely would not be running as smoothly or cleanly (metaphorically and literally) without them! Be sure to learn their names, say hey when you see them, and get to know who they are. They have a wealth of knowledge about the school and students that comes from their unique perspectives. 💡 How well do you know your secretaries and custodians? What valuable lessons have you learned from them? Share with us below! #TeacherTipmas #12DaysOfTips #SchoolSecretary #SchoolStaff #MorelandUniversity

A random day in high school Government class, a classmate suggested I should compete in our city's pageant. I was confident I wouldn't win, after all, my competition had been on the Court for a few years. But, what could it hurt? It was great, free interview practice for college interviews around the corner. (Plus, who doesn't like getting dressed up?!) I tossed on one of my thrifted gowns and... oops. 😅 This was one of the best accidents I could have asked for. Not only did this position provide scholarships, but it taught me skills that prepared me for the legal field: 🌍 researching about each city I travelled ➡ much like researching cases and preparing for trial 🎤 practicing public speaking for a variety of audiences ➡ trial, intake calls, client meetings, you name it! 🗓 managing a team (court) of peers ➡ being an active member of a team and utilizing our strengths for success in the office In the words of Bob Ross, what was your "happy little accident" that now aides you in your career? #HappyLittleAccident #PageantQueen #TransferrableSkills #LawSchool #Graduate #LifeLongLearning

As legal educators, we often face the delicate balance of maintaining academic rigor while supporting students who are navigating the emotional realities of today’s world. It's an important balance to strike, but it is by no means an easy one! This is why I have created the Trauma-Informed Teaching Competencies for Legal Education guide. It is a resource designed to help professors reflect on what it truly means to build trauma-informed classrooms. What would such a space look like? How can we ensure our teaching fosters both learning and well-being? You can download the guide below. I’d love to hear your thoughts: What’s worked for you in creating trauma-informed spaces? What challenges are you facing?

Retired custodian from union city board of education
1moThe Custodial staff are under paid the kids don’t care about the school and hey destroy bathrooms toilets paper dispensers by climbing on them and leave it in toilets I was a custodian for the Ucboe for 28 years I’m retired amd due to Bidenomics I had to get a job I have cafeteria duty as well outside grounds then whatever delivery comes in we have to take it then we have to go in and do our normal routine, which is sweep, mop, Clean the top of the desk, clean two bathrooms, boys and girls on top of the four that I have that are teachers bathrooms and there’s 12 classrooms. It’s just heartbreaking that the pay is so low. and the job is so much then after we do all that that we take out the trash from each classroom sweep the classes we gotta take the garbage in a gray card and walk it all the way to the dumpster. They did have a golf cart in our school, but they took it away because it was broken and they haven’t replaced it since I started working October 25 of 2024 and since then they have not returned the golf cart we are so underpaid for the the work that’s expected from us on top of that. We gotta fix tables. We gotta change lightbulbs we got to fix whatever is broken in the bathroom. I’m a custodian not. maintenance worker
