Many of us are lucky to be able to access so many amazing cuisines, dishes, ingredients and flavours in the cosmopolitan world we live in today. Plus, we know more about what makes a healthy diet and what bodies need to function well. World Food Day celebrates all of this. But it’s also a day to raise awareness for people who don’t share these privileges. Our most popular item to rescue is certainly bagels, and we've been collecting them from a number of places, such as Uber Bagels & Deli. Because of this, our Founder and President has been nicknamed "The Bread Guy" by the friendly front desk faces at Helping Up Mission. What really makes the job of rescuing food so good is hearing from the community in need about how excited they are for donations coming their way. Those at Helping Up Mission enjoy the agency they have, by receiving these bagels, to make their own breakfast sandwiches the next morning. A popular recipe that's been mentioned by one of the front desk employees is an everything bagel, slightly toasted, with a slice of cheese, a fried egg, and a breakfast meat of your choice (could be bacon or sausage), all topped off with A.1. steak sauce. "It's a recipe that I made at home when I was little, and that just brings back great memories," he says. Rescued tens of thousands of pounds of produce, day-old bakery goods and the like that would have ended up in landfills or composts. Distributed over 30,000 nutritionally designed meals and hundreds of personal care packs to needy students. Assisted hundreds of seniors to access food from local food pantries. Every Spring and Fall through our Poultry to Pantries Delivery Day we donate 120,000+ pounds (over 240,000 pounds per year) of nutritious protein to organizations in every corner of Chicagoland.
