Week of MAY 27th, 2024: This week I’m back with the United State of Entertainment working sound at the Brooklyn Monarch again. Unlike last week, my supervisor Alex had me get more familiar with the Grand MA software. Grand MA is a lighting company that provides a board and software that work in tandem. They have released three different models since 1997. Prior to helping the team sound the venue, my supervisor gave me a couple hours to play with the board each day with YouTube tutorials. Originally, I was hoping that my supervisor would have been more hands on, but I think he wanted to see how much I could figure out on my own. For every two hours that I spent with the board alone, he spent an hour showing me his own tips and tricks that he used to navigate the board easier. He explained to me how a Grand MA 2 was the most common board that I would come across. I learned how to control lights through the board as well as how to create shows through the software on my laptop. The menu on a Grand MA of groups, positions, gobos, and color control. I think the coolest thing about lighting is the fact that I’m able to create gobos (designs) and further control their color and speed of movement. LEARNING OUTCOMES & HOW THEY WERE MET   1.    The first thing that I learned this week was to demonstrate effective management of my individual behavior. For several hours this week I was left on my own to teach myself how to operate a unique $25,000 lighting board. There were instances where I felt frustration and wanted to give up. Being persistent allowed me to understand the board better and show my boss that I was taking my internship seriously. I’m not sure when I’ll get the opportunity to just sit and learn Grand MA again. 2.    Another lesson I learned was to allocate time effectively. My supervisor needed me and another associate to sound the stage properly within two hours before he came to inspect. I told my associate that if we get the job done correctly without interruptions then we won’t need to go back and fix anything. Plus, we’ll be able to relax at the end. A third learning outcome was to demonstrate ethical standards appropriate to the internship site. This past Tuesday during the show, I was offered a beer by an associate. While I was tempted to accept, I knew that we had a job to do. The best thing to do at the time was to politely decline. My associate understood and didn’t allow it to harm our relationship.

Meet Dartagnan Birnie! CEPS student majoring in Computer Science. Dartagnan was connected with the start-up business Account Tree as a summer intern. Let's take a peek at his new adventure! Explain your job role: On the first day, my bosses Tom and Kevin made it very clear that I would do a little bit of everything. They couldn’t have been more right about this. I have been deeply involved in the software development process, debugging new versions from our build team, conducting sales through phone and email, writing out instructions and mockups for my own ideas that I believe could benefit the product, along with a constantly growing list of other involvements in the company. What impact has the training had on you thus far? What have you learned? This internship has taught me so many valuable skills even through a mere 2 weeks. I have strengthened my knowledge of the office environment, and how open communication is the most crucial force in a well-oiled business. Another being, the importance of proper documentation, and how to present your ideas and yourself in a way that is comprehensive and presentable to a potential client. Lastly, I have learned an unbelievable amount about accounting, financial literacy, and student activity funds to feel comfortable saying I have established an understanding and enjoyment of the industry. What are the best aspects of your job? The best aspect of my job is that I feel valued and am more included than I would’ve expected from an internship. My work, decisions, and opinions are leaving a real impact on our product and the outlook of the company. Both Tom and Kevin frequently ask for my direction and have encouraged me to become part of the discussion in larger meetings, demos, and training sessions. I do not feel like I can ask a bad question in this environment and I am free to behave as myself. Just for Fun Favorite Ice Cream:       My favorite ice cream flavor is either Oreo or Maple Walnut.

Sadly, I ended my summer internship with NJ State Senator Joseph Cryan yesterday. I wanted to reflect on this amazing experience. It's been a time of immense growth and learning, and I'm endlessly grateful for the opportunity. Firstly, a thank you to everyone who took the time to mentor me. Petra Gaskins, Andreia Veloso, Will DiGrande, and Garrison Keck, I cannot thank you enough for your guidance. From diving into challenging projects to collaborating with talented professionals, every day this summer has made me into a better person. Some key takeaways from this internship: 1. Constituent Outreach: As an intern, part of my daily tasks was to oversee a section of the office inbox. When constituents wrote to the office about a bill, I researched the topic and drafted a response with the bill's current status and the Senator's position on the issue. 2.  Legislative Research: One of my favorite aspects of this internship was being able to help with research on a variety of topics. Whether that was finding current scientific data about a particular issue or researching legislation in other states, I loved contributing to the Senator's legislative agenda. 3.  Legislative Organization: When working in a legislative office, there is always lots of incoming information about bills. It was a great responsibility being able to organize all of the Senator's sponsored bills for this session of Congress. I updated this database after every caucus to ensure its accuracy. I'm excited to take these insights into my future endeavors and continue growing as a professional. Thank you again to Senator Cryan for making this summer unforgettable.
