Fantastic conference held by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology (IMarEST) today - congrats to Patrick Carpenter on a great event. The whole day was full of value-providing conversations. I was happy to attend with 3 great industry leaders who wave the flag for social media content in the maritime industry. Ann P., a Master Mariner, was awarded the Merchant Navy Medal for her advocacy of diversity and inclusion in the maritime industry, mentoring, and supporting underprivileged individuals in maritime education. India Syms, a qualified Deck Officer of the Watch, recently served as Navigator and Safety Officer in the Ocean Globe Race 2023. She has extensive sailing experience and has inspired young females into a career in maritime, amassing a significant TikTok following in the process. Ben McInnes, Harbour Master at Portsmouth International Port, brings a wealth of maritime experience, including a background with 12 years at the Royal Fleet Auxiliary. His work in using social media to attract the next generation into the industry is commendable, as he actively engages with schools to introduce students to maritime careers at Portsmouth. These industry leaders are true role models who inspire the next generation of the workforce. Nothing comes sailing by itself, said the famous Norwegian Swimmer Alexander Dale Oen. From conception to execution, it has taken us 4.5 years to get the CGS Retriever Zhuk vessel from the harbour to campus. The word that comes to mind is resilience, given that we have been in existence little shy of 7 years. #ClosingtheDreamGap: Getting a decommissioned ship on campus goes beyond signaling an offer of maritime studies for school leavers. It is a statement that #unconventionalcareers can and should be explored. It is a statement that new age, hi tech and modern #technicaleducation is now the #preferredoption and no more the #secondchance programme of yesteryears. It is a statement that #simulationdrivenlearning holds the key to higher and more direct employability. Our placement in FT employment at graduation is currently #98percent. It is a statement that the #impossible can be #possible if some are crazy enough to think that it will happen💪🏼💪🏼👋👋 As a country surrounded by an exclusive economic zone of 2.3 million square kms of ocean, skilling our nation state for the Ocean economy has never been more pressing. At USP Maritime, we've always believed in embracing a flexible work culture, and this past year, our work-from-home policy has proven not just beneficial for productivity but also for our team's personal passions - particularly winter sports! Our expert marine engineers and naval architects have enjoyed an unforgettable ski season, taking advantage of the freedom to blend work with play. This flexibility has led to an interesting, albeit unexpected, discovery. After a season filled with slopes and snow, our informal data has revealed a fun tidbit: Naval architects might just be the better skiers – or at least the safer ones – compared to our mechanical engineers! While we jest about the competitive spirit between our departments, this season has underscored the value of work-life balance. Our team has returned to their desks rejuvenated, full of stories, and sometimes nursing a few bruises (and cracked ribs & torn ligaments...). It's a reminder that taking time to pursue personal interests and adventures can significantly enrich our professional lives and team dynamics. At USP Maritime, we're more than just a team; we're a family that supports each other's pursuits, both on and off the water.
