🆕 A new framework for climate and impact attribution of compound extremes will be developed within the new European project COMPASS. The project will be led by Deltares. “Climate change is already increasing the frequency and severity of extreme weather events, such as storms, heatwaves, and droughts. Such events can have devastating societal impacts, and it is becoming increasingly clear that the most impactful disasters are often the result of a complex interplay of multiple physical and societal drivers.” Sanne Muis, coordinator of COMPASS. 🧭 COMPASS will innovate by going from the attribution of single-driver extremes to the attribution of more complex extremes (including compounding, sequential and cascading hazard events) and enabling a shift from a hazard-centred analysis to an impact-centred perspective. 🖥 Deltares will focus on water-related hazards and develop an automated workflow that uses a combination of the Delft3D Flexible Mesh, SIFNCS and Wflow software. 🤝 The COMPASS consortium consists of Deltares (Netherlands), Met Office (UK), PIK - Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), Uniwersytet Szczeciński (Poland), Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre (Netherlands), and @SEVEN (Greece). The project officially kicked off on 5 and 6 February 2024, when the consortium members met in Delft. Glad to see others realizing the power of ocean data collaboration. The OCN ecosystem has cracked the code in how to incentivise such a data collaboration as well as model the valuation of blue natural capital that fuels a revolution. I’ve said it plenty of times but the ocean is the superweapon against climate change. Turning lack of data to valuable marketable data is our specialty. Our ocean risk score is key to identifying how well or not well various areas perform under stress. We can do this because we are part of a network of folks who share data. https://lnkd.in/gy2Hxq82
