I advance health equity as an Award-Winning Professor and Anti-Racism Educator, transforming healthcare education to prepare future leaders and improve outcomes for marginalized communities.
Just finished part 2 of my #structuralracism curriculum with GW medical students in the Community and Urban Health Scholarly Concentration. We focused on #scientificracism and how it shows up in our interpretations of population health data, gets codified in curriculum (and board exams) and is riddled throughout the literature base that informs it all. #unlearn #relearn #bias #meded #GW #medicalracism #deij #disrupt #disruptor

📚 Excited to share our latest publication on university students' health literacy during the COVID-19 pandemic! Our systematic review, conducted following PRISMA guidelines, analyzed studies from Dec 2019 to June 2022, uncovering key determinants affecting health literacy among 17,773 students across various countries. Positive determinants include factors like age, gender, educational background, and access to health information sources, while negative determinants such as substance use and financial constraints were also identified. Our findings underscore the importance of tailored health literacy courses for students, aligned with their disciplines and individual needs. Let's empower students worldwide with essential health knowledge! #HealthLiteracy #ResearchPublication #COVID19 #UniversityStudents 🎓🌐

Today I had the opportunity to attend a webinar from Stanford Medicine's REACH Lab (aka Halpern-Felsher REACH Lab) about their Safety First Curriculum. The mission of this curriculum is "educating and empowering teenagers to make safe and healthy choices must be our highest priority." I am so impressed by the amount of research in both evidence-based practice and what works best for young people (from young people) that goes into producing this material. I highly recommend checking it out!!! #overdoseprevention #harmreductionsaveslives https://lnkd.in/e9ZQZdXK

School Improvement, School Discipline/Behavior Interventions (PBS/SEL), and MTSS Multi-Tiered Services Expert/Consultant
Helping Schools Pick and Implement the Best Evidence-Based Programs: Avoiding Mistakes, Best Practices, and Pilot Projects (Part II) Building on Part I of this two-part Series, this Blog Part II first discusses the evaluative approaches used by the What Works Clearinghouse for education and the Evidence-Based Practices Resource Center for mental health to rate the validity and sound implementation of specific programs, curricula, and interventions in districts, schools, and other educational settings. We then summarize the five “mistakes” that educators should avoid when choosing evidence-based programs. These mistakes are: (a) Equating Research Quality with Program Quality; (b) Looking only at the summary (or rating); (c) Focusing too much on effect size; (d) Forgetting whom the program serves; and (e) Taking ‘no effect’ for a conclusive answer. Finally, we expand the discussion, addressing why education should change the term “Best Practices” to “Effective Practices,” and why educators should be wary when administrators give permission for “Pilot Projects” in lieu of the full, system-wide implementation of well-validated programs, curricula, or interventions. Read this important Blog. What do you think?
