The Russian government and its proxies attempted to denigrate the Democratic Party and undermine voter confidence ahead of the 2022 midterm elections, an operation that most likely sought to weaken U.S. support for Ukraine, U.S. intelligence agencies said. China also tacitly approved efforts to try to influence a handful of unidentified midterm races, though it refrained from favoring one party, as Beijing exhibited a greater willingness to target the U.S. with election influence activities than it has previously, according to a newly released intelligence community assessment. Iran also was blamed for trying to undermine confidence in U.S. democracy, while other foreign governments, including Cuba, were said to have experimented with small-scale U.S. influence pushes. The findings come amid rising concerns from U.S. officials and security experts about the potential that foreign adversaries may pour ample resources into interfering in the 2024 presidential election contest eight years after Russia engineered a multipronged interference campaign to help Republican Donald Trump defeat Hillary Clinton, his Democratic foe in the 2016 election. Such fears have been fanned by advances in artificial intelligence and other technologies that could be weaponized by bad actors to sow chaos and confusion in the lead-up to a likely rematch between President Biden and Trump. The former president has criticized U.S. military aid to Ukraine and claimed that, if elected again, he could broker a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia in 24 hours. https://lnkd.in/eSzDxyWz

Russia’s presidential election is nearing. We already know who the winner will be CNN — Russia is nearing a presidential election that is all but certain to extend Vladimir Putin’s rule throughout this decade and into the 2030s. The vast majority of votes will be cast over three days from 15 March, though early and postal voting has already begun, including in occupied parts of Ukraine where Russian forces are attempting to exert authority. But this is not a normal election; the poll is essentially a constitutional box-ticking exercise that carries no prospect of removing Putin from power. The president’s dominance over the Russian electoral system has already been reinforced as the election looms. The country’s only anti-war candidate has been barred from standing, and Alexey Navalny, the poisoned and jailed former opposition leader who was the most prominent anti-Putin voice in Russia, died last Friday. Here’s what you need to know about the election. When and where https://lnkd.in/gCy-Mdvq

VOA: Let’s start with Taiwan’s elections. According to the Taiwanese government, China has been interfering in the election, including spreading disinformation and misinformation. Taiwanese prosecutors are investigating allegations that China bribed Taiwanese officials with travel and money to influence the election. When they met in San Francisco, President Biden told President Xi Jinping not to interfere with the Taiwan election. Is President Xi is ignoring his advice? John Kirby, National Security Council coordinator for strategic communications: I can't confirm these individual reports of interference with the electoral process in Taiwan. We've been very clear that we respect Taiwan's democratic institutions. We respect the will of the people of Taiwan to make these sorts of decisions in terms of their own governance. And we don't want any other actor, be it a nation state or otherwise, to interfere in this election. https://lnkd.in/eCvspvjp

Foreign policy commands attention for both Biden and Trump—our data from the US Elections Index finds it drives between 50% and 60% of the conversation. In our latest webinar, 'What our AI says about Biden vs. Trump,' host Daniel Gaynor asks Stephen Krupin, 'How has the presidential conversation about foreign policy shifted since you were writing for the secretary of state?' The economy has always been voters' No. 1 priority, but is that changing this year? Stephen thinks messaging and campaigning around foreign policy may be hurting more than helping. If you didn't catch the webinar live, you can watch it here! 👉 https://bit.ly/3JJgc56

On Feb. 25, #Russia began early voting for the presidential election in the occupied Ukrainian regions of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia. While the main election is scheduled for March 15-17 across Russia and the occupied Crimea, this early voting initiative aims to boost participation rates, attempting to project an image of legitimacy around the elections in the occupied areas. Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to clinch his fifth term in unfair and non-competitive elections, as he controls the media and has handpicked the candidates allowed to participate. HRF condemns Russia’s conduct of elections in the occupied territories of #Ukraine, a clear violation of international law. We call upon the international community not to recognize the results of Russia’s 2024 presidential elections.
