Last Thursday was International Project Management Day. There’s a saying that project management is as easy as riding a bike, except the bike is on fire, you’re on fire and everything is on fire. That’s a little extreme…but their role can be complex, frustrating and rewarding, all at the same time. We’ve had the privilege of working with many excellent Project Managers over the years! Their work is invaluable to any project. I remember the first project I worked on where a project manager joined. I thought it was a waste of time bringing in an additional layer of decision making and couldn’t imagine what value they would bring. I’ve been known to be wrong occasionally and this was one of those times 😊 They were able to guide us seamlessly through all the elements of the project and it took the stress away from the team so we could all concentrate on our areas of expertise. Here are a few hints and tips from our expert Project Managers to help your day feel a little easier: ✅ Plan your day - Don’t rush into your work at the start of the day. Take a few minutes to plan your morning, see what’s coming up and prioritise your to-do list. ✅ Communication - Check in with your team regularly, especially if you are working remotely. This will give the team the opportunity to raise any concerns or queries so issues don’t come as a surprise. ✅ Add a buffer -  Whether it’s estimating timeframes, calculating a budget or ordering materials [GO2] always round up so that you’ve covered if anything unexpected happens. We often encounter the habitual use of percentage metrics to communicate progress. It can seem straightforward, right? Unfortunately, that is not always the case. A few years ago in my Forbes piece, “One Progress “Metric” You Need To Get Rid Of", I shed light on the fallacy of using "percent complete" as a progress update. Teresa Lynch, formerly of Comcast, who is a seasoned project management expert, rightly emphasizes the flaw in this approach—knowing someone is 99% done doesn't tell us when the task will be finished. Teresa's wisdom underscores a critical point: accountability and clarity on completion dates are the true measures of progress. Project managers often grapple with the limitations of project management software tools that demand the use of percentages. However, this doesn't mean we should rely on vague reporting.
