A few months ago, we embarked on a (kind of crazy) journey to Mallorca to oversee the renovation of a holiday finca. Initially, my vision was idyllic—a hammock swaying gently in the breeze.... However, reality soon set in. Throughout my career, I've seen a lot and tackled quite challenging projects: from navigating complex ventures at BMW to co-founding 27pilots and pioneering the Venture Client model in corporate-startup collaborations, to scaling Planet A Foods to 40+ employees across two countries. But can you believe that none have been as complex as managing the Bella Vida project? Its been a pleasure to meet Kudzai today, our newest Board Observer at Hatch Enterprise UK. I was super excited to finally meet in person after we had met online a couple of times during the onboarding process and during our last board meeting. We've talked about the rise of the far right in Europe, the riots in the UK and how we can continue to level the playing field for founders from underrepresented backgrounds. We also talked about what it means to develop grit and resilience to succeed in this world and he shared a really interesting story how he got his first big job after the financial crisis...back in the days... This story was a tell tale sign of someone who's thinking outside the box, as he shared that when he looked for a job he was getting nowhere sending CVs to agencies, recruiters, job portals. This was until someone suggested to look at some of the companies he'd love to work for and figure out a problem or opportunity that could help them be a better business. He did just that with Thomas Cook, then emailed the CEO about an opportunity around positioning travel agencies for the digital age as people would no longer go to physical travel centres but book travel online. The CEO was interested but wasn't the right person to take this forward, so the CEO introduced him to the right person at the organisation. This approach eventually landed him a job as Strategic Innovation Executive, helping transform the organisation by identifying new opportunities through corporate-startup collaborations and identifying new digital opportunities. I've read the same advice recently on Steven Bartlett's post here on Linkedin, where he advised people who are getting in touch with him to go deeper, to offer value or at least make a meaningful connection with him and why he should give someone his attention. As founders and #entrepreneurs we always have to think outside the box to deliver value to our customers and stakeholders and its this 'going beyond' that then generates new insights, new opportunities and new relationships. Time for farewell. My 5 year period as the CEO of platform company Rideer Nordic came to an end with the arrival of the new year. I will soon move on to new opportunities of which more later on. The past 5 years has been a period marked by diverse challenges, valuable lessons, joy of triumphs and navigating through the COVID-caused complexities in the public transportation industry. At the same time, the company has grown to new business segments, new markets and the long-term strategic focus has become significantly clearer and more result-oriented. Rideer is now the market leader at both Finnish and Swedish markets and equipped with an accurate road map for future growth. I am grateful for the experience in many ways and look forward to following the company's future, now from the backseat as a shareholder. Letting go has been surprisingly hard as the company has become very important to me. Still, I am confident that the time for change is right for both me and Rideer. As for myself, the upcoming change is exciting - somewhat nerve-wracking even. Yet most of my life's best decisions have come from taking a leap into the unknown, and I trust that this will be no exception from that.
