More detail on the program next week: More detail on the luncheon! Thrive Luncheon - Closing the Gap June 6, 2024 11:30 AM - 1:00 PM (EDT) Description Women in the U.S. workforce continue to struggle for equal pay and face challenges advancing in their careers. While women make up nearly half of the workforce, research shows that women continue to earn less than men and struggle for equal representation. “A 20-year-old woman just starting full-time, year-round work stands to lose $407,760 over a 40-year career compared to her male counterpart” (National Women’s Law Center Surprisingly, some of the industries with the largest pay gaps have the greatest share of female workers. Women outnumber men in earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees and are nearly on par in getting medical and legal degrees and still men are more likely than women to get the highest paying leadership roles. The gender pay gap also varies considerably by race and ethnicity, and by other demographics. Join us as the Chamber’s Senior VP of Programs & Initiatives, Celeste Granger, presents an overview of the disparity in pay and leadership opportunities for women in the workforce. Following the presentation, we’ll hear from panelists versed in how we can work to identify the barriers and close the gap. Panelists include: Rachael Georgas, SHRM SCP, Director of Human Resources & Workforce Analytics, Sonepar Kimberly A. Gertner, Associate Vice President, Human Resources and Employee Success, College of Charleston Moderator: Kenya Dunn, CEO and Founder, The Power Filled Woman Event Details Thursday, June 6 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Segra Club at Riley Park 360 Fishburne St. Charleston, SC 29403

I empower solo coaches with easy all-in-one tech for beginners, to attract and serve more clients | CoachOnline.Tech
So much wisdom, vulnerability, sharing and sisterly support at the Portfolio Collective fireside chat today in celebration of #internationalwomensday2024 Thank you to host Nicola Twiston Davies ACC and panel members Fiona Chorlton-Voong, Maria Evans, confidence coach, Jade Buffong-Phillips and Vanesa Pazos. So many gems that it's impossible to cover them all, but here are a few snippets (NB I'm paraphrasing, not quoting!) Maria reminded us that women should not beat themselves up if they lack some confidence, but keep working on it, because it impacts our life choices, ability to negotiate and therefore outcomes. Just 50 years ago we could not even apply for a credit card without a man's sign-off. It takes time to move away from this ingrained patriarchal culture, but we will accelerate together. We also need to constantly remind organisations that diversity of opinion in leadership teams makes good economic sense and stronger orgs - it's not just a nice to have. Vanesa encouraged us all to show up as our authentic selves, and build a tribe around us to support and encourage each other, like a virtual advisory board. We are stronger together. We need to change how society reacts when girls and women assert their opinions, too often we are told to simmer down instead of being actively listened to and our opinions valued. The flexibility we seek in the workplace is not just good for women, it's good for everyone. Jade shared her experiences of working part-time and still smashing targets as Head of Marketing. She caused us all to challenge the preconceptions that you have to work endlessly to achieve great things. Whether working for an organisation or for yourself, take a moment to think through what you want out of life. Figure out what part of it you want to be taken up by your work, and make space for other things that are important to you, be that family, friends, causes or hobbies. It's almost always worth asking your employer for the flexibility to accommodate your wishes. If they say no, reframe this, and either acknowledge that they are not the right organisation for you, or perhaps decide that you are willing to compromise. But if you don't ask, you'll never know. Fiona went further to say it can always be the start of a dialogue, a bit like objection handling in sales - see if you can turn it into a yes. Don't take it personally - be objective and negotiate. As she recently became a mother (congrats again Fiona!) this has given her a new perspective on the space that work takes up, and she encourages us all to know our worth, and be confident of our value when pitching our services. We are giving up our valuable time that could be spent with our loved ones, so we owe it to them and ourselves to put a fair price on it! I absolutely loved this fireside chat and came away buzzing. Thanks to the Portfolio Collective and panel for the inspiration, and some great new connections! Happy International Women's Day everyone. ❤️

International Day of Women and Girls in Science, 11 February: Did you know? - Women are typically given smaller research grants than their male colleagues and, while they represent 33.3% of all researchers, only 12% of members of national science academies are women. -In cutting edge fields such as artificial intelligence, only one in five professionals (22%) is a woman. -Despite a shortage of skills in most of the technological fields driving the Fourth Industrial Revolution, women still account for only 28% of engineering graduates and 40% of graduates in computer science and informatics. - Female researchers tend to have shorter, less well-paid careers. Their work is underrepresented in high-profile journals and they are often passed over for promotion. Thanks to United Nations and IPBES for all info. #womeninscience

Thematic Lead & Senior Researcher at Raoul Wallenberg Inst. (RWI) & Director of the Global Network of Human Rights & Environment (GNHRE)
Now that the UN Biodiversity has a specific #genderequality target as part of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework #GBF (Target 23), there is an window of opportunity for #womeninscience to collaborate more closely with #womeninlaw in order to close the compliance gap in #biodiversity #law. Participating in the IPBES expert group in #policy support tools and methodologies was a rewarding experience. This was a time in which we were only two lawyers in the group. Do you know if the trend has changed and there are now more lawyers including #womenlawyers contributing to IPBES expert groups and assessments? Hearing the voices of women participating in the IPBES processes can be inspiring for women in #STEM but also for women and girls interested in using the law to enact change. Check-out the video below. #fornature #womeninscienceday
