In 2023, PIARC - World Road Association reaffirmed its strong commitment to advancing road safety, especially in low- and middle-income countries (#LMICs), by spearheading the #Road_Safety Knowledge Exchange Project. This ambitious project, conducted in collaboration with esteemed partners such as the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and the Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT), tackled multifaceted road safety challenges prevalent across the globe. The Road Safety Knowledge Exchange Project was meticulously designed to address a spectrum of critical issues, ranging from vehicle safety and speed management to infrastructure design and human behavior. Recognizing that a staggering 90% of traffic fatalities occur in LMICs, PIARC's Technical Committee 3.1 "Road Safety" took proactive steps to evaluate, identify, and disseminate evidence-based solutions tailored to the unique contexts of these regions. The culmination of this project is marked by the release of a comprehensive final report, which encapsulates invaluable insights, recommendations, and best practices gleaned from extensive research and collaboration. Nine hundred thirty souls got together at the TxDOT 2023 PEPS Conference in Galveston Texas, where we, as Consultants, acknowledged concerns trends, and recommended practices to deliver projects in the TxDOT way. My favorite session was about Win-Win negotiations. Darren McDaniel, P.E. from the Transportation Program Division, stated that TxDOT wants quality work for a fair price, and the consultants seek clear expectations and reasonable profit. When we found this sweet spot during our negotiations, we reached a Win-Win deal. As a sound engineer, Darren provided an equation that allows us to evaluate the negotiation and determine how fair or one-sided the negotiation went. The main idea is that successful negotiations happen when both parties focus on reaching an agreement that benefits everyone involved. If both sides approach the negotiation with the right attitude, they can likely get a win-win outcome. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is considering expanding and upgrading the Lee County rest stop on I-75, located just South of Fort Meyers. To this end, WGI - an engineering, land surveying, and professional services firm - is conducting a feasibility study that covers a wide range of area renovations and expanded facilities. As part of this study, ecoPreserve's Peter Westlake has documented ways to configure an Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure (EVCI) at the rest stop. Pete's observations and recommendations included shore power locations for trucks and charger locations for trucks, buses, and cars. #evci #transportation #sustainability
