“’We’ve witnessed the power of having someone sit beside the guest and say, I’ve been where you’ve been. I’m here to support you. We’ll figure this out together,’ said Bowen Center Peer Supervisor Rachael Adams. She oversees a staff with a variety of experiences. ‘Each peer has their own unique lived experience. So, when a guest comes in, odds are they’re going to encounter someone who’s had similar lived experiences.’” https://lnkd.in/gvUz_BfZ

I approach therapy from a psychodynamic perspective, with an emphasis on relational and attachment theories. My clients have reflected that I offer a calming and grounded presence – even in the midst of challenging situations. As a social worker, I critically consider the intersectional contexts, systems and families that people grow up in, and strive to work within an anti-oppressive framework. I aim to be an attuned, caring and honest clinician who accompanies couples with care, empathy and support. https://lnkd.in/d6dXpccH

Registered Clinical Counsellor | Integrative Therapist | Trauma-Attuned Specialist | Educator | Facilitator | Artist
👥 Reflecting on a Decade of Counselling: Embracing Self-Friendship 🌱 After over a decade as a professional counsellor, I've been deeply reflecting on the journey so far. The therapy world is buzzing with trauma-focused discussions for good reason: We are all walking wounded in one way or another. 🩹 Our early attachment needs and how our caregivers responded to us as children play a significant role in shaping our relationships throughout life. Often, we relive these early woundings in our adult relationships, whether through a partner who mirrors a parent's traits or friendships where we feel undervalued, for example. 💔 The most frequent question I hear from clients is “How do I be on my own team?” Being friends with yourself is a skill that requires daily practice. Our relationship with ourselves is the longest-running relationship we’ll have—yet we're rarely taught how to nurture it. 🌟 Growing up in a culture where self-care was seen as selfish, I struggled with self hatred. Through therapy and inner child work, I’ve learned that embracing all parts of ourselves, even those that adapted in harmful ways to survive, is crucial. 🤲 Jung described the Self as the totality of the psyche, encompassing all aspects of personality. Part of this involves recognizing and healing our inner children—those parts of us that developed protective roles like the pleaser, the comedian, or the workhorse. 🛠️ Being compassionate towards these parts can increase our connection to self, reducing shame and fostering self-friendship. It's about showing up for ourselves with the same love and understanding we offer to others. 🌿 Remember, our bodies and minds need regular maintenance, just like a vehicle—only we can’t trade them in. Cultivating self-friendship is a lifelong journey, but every step towards self-acceptance and love is a step towards greater overall well-being. 💪 Start today. Start now. I no longer hate myself and have the tools to reconnect with myself. The more I show up for me, the better I can show up for others. 💖 #MentalHealth #SelfCare #Therapy #SelfCompassion #InnerChildWork #Counseling #PersonalGrowth
