Pride Month is an incredibly empowering time of year, full of meaningful events that must also be proactively accessible and inclusive for disabled 2SLGBTQ+ folx. Let's remember that Canada is home to about 1 million people who identify as LGBTQ2+ -- and this number undoubtedly intersects with the 8 million Canadians who live with disability and, as a result, face increased health inequities related to these (and other) pieces of their identities. (Stats Canada) This Pride month, please take some time to learn about intersectionality, disability inclusion, accessibility and the discrimination faced by people who experience the world through multiple lenses -- with each lens valid and valuable. A great place to start in the recent Studies on Gender and Intersecting Identities by Women and Gender Equality Canada, named "Functional health difficulties among lesbian, gay and bisexual people in Canada" (link below in comments). It's Neurodiversity Celebration Week and this week we have focussed on learning about the intersect between Neurodiversity and Gender Diversity - it's been eye opening! This stat blew us away from a 2018 Australian study found that 22.5% of transgender adolescents had a diagnosis of autism, compared to 2.5% of all Australians, and the researchers estimate up to 25% of gender diverse people may also be Autistic.
