Earlier this summer, we were humbled to be part of the first annual Stop Stigma Together (SST) summit to end the stigma against mental illness and substance use disorder. As part of our participation, we had the opportunity to share the findings from ‘The Projected Cost and Economic Impact of Mental Health Inequities in the United States report,’ authored by national expert Daniel Dawes, Dean of the Meharry School of Global Health with fellow attendees. Through our commitment to health for every mind, we will continue to emphasize that the mental health crisis in the United States should be treated as an emergency, encompassing a cross-sector approach. 💡 Let's get real about what's in our medicine cabinets. With a staggering number of the population on SSRIs, it's time to pause and reflect. 🤔 Findings from Oxford and others are challenging what we've accepted for decades. Are these medications truly a lifeline, or are we missing the mark on treating mental health at its core? It's not just about the numbers or the science; it's about the real stories of people feeling worse, not better. 🚫💊 This isn't about dismissing the struggle or the need for help; it's about demanding better, more effective solutions that address the root of our mental health crisis, not just the symptoms. Why are we settling for a "solution" that might be amplifying the problem? Let's talk, let's question, and most importantly, let's listen to each other. Your voice matters in reshaping the future of mental health care. 🗣️✨ #MentalHealthAwareness #SSRIs #TimeForChange #ListenToTheScience #BeyondMedication #RealTalk #CommunityHealing #QuestionTheStatusQuo Tim Jensen Grunt Style Foundation Veteran Mental Health Leadership Coalition Reason for Hope The American Legion

Community is the Medicine We All Need! Workshop with Elizabeth Markle The REAL Summit https://lnkd.in/e9PDP4cG Deutsche Bank HQ Oct 17-18 I know firsthand how crucial community is to healing—it played a huge role in helping me get better. That’s exactly what THE REAL Mental Health Foundation is all about: creating a space where people can connect, support one another, and grow. Research shows that individuals with strong social connections are 50% more likely to live longer, and community support has been proven to reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation, which are key factors in mental health challenges. I’m especially looking forward to Elizabeth Markle’s upcoming workshop at THE REAL Summit. Her work on community and mental health is groundbreaking, and I believe it can make a profound impact on how we all support each other through difficult times. Join us in exploring how community can truly be the medicine we all need! Does this capture the tone and message you’re aiming for? Here is me presenting at the #FMHC24 on Tuesday. I asked the audience if they think the situation in regards to the mental health of first responders has been getting better or worse since the increasing injection of money into the sector over the last few years. Only 8% of attendees thought it was getting better. The vast majority of that group are right. The last 3 years have seen a 56% increase in serious psychological injury claims in NSW. Also increasing numbers of personnel from every first responder agency in NSW report lower levels of perceived wellbeing (PMES results). What we are doing is NOT working at a macro level. It is time for a change in the way we understand and respond to psychological distress. The evidence for the need to change our programs is loud and getting louder. Let’s change the operational and occupational context first responders work in. #moralinjury #psychosocialhazards #systemschange #leadership #justculture
A great few days at the Front Line Mental Health Confrence in Gold Coast. Some take aways worth discussing; - Is the Mental Health of our frontline workers getting enough of the right attention? Funding isn’t enough! - Mental Health screening doesn’t work, what next? - Safety plans around suicide ideation should be talked about (and actioned on) more. Some great discussions, ideas & progressive solutions. Thank you Australian and New Zealand Mental Health Association Inc. for a great event!

Identifying, embracing & developing commonalities of trauma journey experience between disparate marginalised communities.
The recent passing of Graham Thorpe reminds us all, again, of the vital importance of raising awareness of, and smashing the associated stigma of, #anxiety #depression & #suicide. So many of us suffer in silence, become lonely and isolated within our crippling thoughts and often toxic behaviours, and quickly spiral into chaos, uncertainty and self-destruction. What's needed is a full awareness of the necessary environment that empowers those living with the darkness and demons of poor mental health to reach out, to ask for help and to engage with help when it's available and offered. Openness, honesty and being non-judgemental are essential elements of this necessary environment and we all have a role to play in this. We also must strive, as individuals, organisations and as a society, to put yet more emphasis upon embedding the #livedexperience of those who have lived, and continue to live, with poor mental health at the heart of decision making, funding and provision of support services, signposting and diagnosis. Only then will society truly understand and get what it is to live with the demons and darkness that drive too many to the edge of their sanity and to take their lives. I'm so proud to have worked, through The Daparian Foundation Trauma Fellowship & Society journey into academia, on research studies that have sought to champion and showcase the lived experience of those living with #trauma and #ptsd, initially within the #veteran and #bluelight worlds and laterly within all #marginalised communities, and to continue to do so through my research role at the Doncaster Health Determinants Research Collaboration. So much more to do, so much more raising awareness and so much more stigma smashing! We all have a part to play on this journey. RIP Graham. ❤️
