Replacing ancient fossil fuel boilers and inefficient HVAC units in old high-rise buildings is a win for decarbonatization, but not so much for the inhabitants going through the huge disruption of retrofitting, not to mention the cost of the transformation. This is a good article as it talks about radiant heating but there are better systems than tubing (hydronic) systems. An all-electric radiant heating system means no boilers or pumps to maintain. ThermaRay's thermal storage system is less expensive and faster to install than a tube system. It also allows you to take advantage of off-peak electric rates. ThermaRay also manufactures 2x4 metal ceiling panels that can be easily installed in a suspended ceiling or surface mounted that can easily and inexpensively address those difficult-to-heat areas. Ever sit by a window in the winter? You can eliminate that cold uncomfortable spot by installing a ceiling heater over the area. ThermaRay also has an easy-to-install snow-melting system that addresses all the issues in this article. Wiring is simple, it is in a conduit to a control box. The U-value, also known as the thermal transmittance, is a measure of the rate of heat transfer through a building material or assembly. It is the reciprocal of the R-value, which is a measure of the material's resistance to heat flow. The U-value is expressed in units of watts per square meter per Kelvin (W/(m²·K)). A lower U-value indicates a higher resistance to heat flow and better insulation performance. It represents how much heat can pass through a material or assembly per unit area and per degree of temperature difference. Therefore, a lower U-value means that less heat is transmitted through the material, resulting in better energy efficiency and thermal comfort. U-values are commonly used in the building industry to assess the thermal performance of walls, roofs, windows, and other building components. They are influenced by factors such as the thickness and conductivity of the materials used, as well as the presence of air gaps, insulation, and other components within the assembly. When designing or evaluating the energy efficiency of a building, it is important to consider the U-values of the different building elements and assemblies to minimize unwanted heat transfer and optimize thermal comfort. Building codes and energy efficiency standards often set maximum U-value requirements for different components to ensure buildings meet certain performance standards.

"Heat pumps don't work in retrofits, only in eco houses." If you've been in the heating game a while, you've probably heard this more times than you can count. Where has it come from? And is it true? Retrofits bring about their own challenges and considerations, but like any system design a full and accurate heat loss is your starting point. Forget all the jargon, it's as simple as if your heat pump can't put in the same amount of energy to the areas of the house that are experiencing heat loss, the system can't bring the property to the desired internal temperature. Heat loss increases as either a) outside temperature drops or b) internal temperature increases. The greater that differential, the greater the rate of heat transfer. So you need a heat pump with more 'oomph', or kW (Energy per second) output, in normal terms. E = mcdT or Energy requirement (instantanious) is mass of air x specific heat capacity x difference between internal and outside temperatures. What are some ways to reduce instantaneous heat loss and make use of a smaller unit (whilst not sacrificing performance)? The most simple are: 1. Decreasing fabric losses (by insulating) 2. Decreasing unwanted air changes through leaky windows, brickwork or doors. These are the two major components of any heat loss and being realistic about the losses of a Retrofit mean that an appropriately sized heat pump can be fitted anywhere. There are, of course, other considerations but I thought this would be an interesting one to talk about. Throughout my career I've seen some impressively low heat losses on retrofits, which proves that it can be done as long as an honest conversation is had with the client about what insulation measures they're willing to fit and what other works need to take place to make the building low temp ready. Ideal Heating – Commercial Products has announced the addition of four new models to its Evojet pressure jet boilers, extending the range output up to 3000kW. These new models join the existing Evojet range of condensing pressure jet boilers, with outputs starting from 150kW. This brings the range up to 14 boilers, all of which offer high efficiency through their condensing operation and modulation capabilities of the burners. The new floor standing condensing Evojet 3-pass pressure jet boilers are available with outputs of 1750kW, 2100kW, 2600kW and 3000kW for applications requiring either single or multiple boiler configurations.
