Prioritize outcomes, not over-utilization of our services. Something all therapists need to consider, especially as we see an increase in need for quick access to therapy. If we keep patients longer than necessary, it limits early access to achieve better outcomes.
36 visits. That’s what a NYC-based physical therapy clinic recently recommended to someone I know—after a 45-minute initial evaluation for hip discomfort. To put that into perspective: 36 visits equals over 8 months of weekly PT. On what planet is this appropriate? On what planet do patients feel they have to accept this? On what planet did we lose the need for reassessment throughout treatment? As healthcare providers, our mission is simple: empower people to help themselves, not create dependency on our services. Therapy is a tool for recovery, independence, and long-term wellness. Let’s do better. Let’s prioritize outcomes over visit counts.
