I'm thrilled to attend a service design pitch event featuring a group from Japan and two from the Bay Area, who have been developing their ideas over the past 10 weeks. There's a tendency in the design industry to begin brainstorming with little preparation. The results are usually pretty meh. At Delve, we brainstorm frequently, but we don't believe in jumping into a brainstorming session before goals are well-defined. We call our brainstorming technique “structured ideation." It may not sound as sexy as brainstorming, but it works. We recently demonstrated the method to a group of design students developing a line of bamboo bike accessories.
