The Heart of Saigon: Envisioning Ben Thanh Market’s Future with Times Square’s Vibrance https://ift.tt/mblJQ30 Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee, Phan Van Mai, conveyed a powerful message in a recent notice regarding the transformation of parks and pedestrian spaces in downtown District 1. Mai emphasized the municipal government’s vision to create a vibrant and iconic space in front of Ben Thanh Market, a long-standing commercial and tourist hub in the city. In this ambitious plan, Mai entrusted the chairman of the District 1 administration, Le Duc Thanh, with the task of coordinating with relevant agencies to propose an innovative optimization plan for the area. Mai’s vision is to develop this space into a bustling center, akin to Times Square in New York City, that becomes a famous commercial intersection, a must-visit tourist destination, and a vibrant entertainment hub. The area in front of the market will undergo a remarkable transformation into a travel, cultural, and culinary hotspot, showcasing and promoting the unique identity of the city. The municipal administration, understanding the potential of Ham Nghi Street and September 23 Park, has instructed district authorities to develop these locations into versatile venues capable of hosting a diverse range of economic, political, cultural, and social activities. To ensure the timely execution of this ambitious project, Mai has set a deadline of April 30, 2025, for the clear identification of all public spaces in the downtown district, with relevant plans to be submitted to the city administration by January 15, 2025. Furthermore, the district administration has been directed to draft comprehensive regulations governing the operations of parks and pedestrian areas, including the future square in front of Ben Thanh Market and its surrounding areas. These regulations will encompass clear guidelines for organizing events, ensuring safety and security, maintaining order, and preventing traffic congestion. They will also delineate the responsibilities of agencies and businesses involved in public space activities, along with inspection and violation-handling procedures. A dynamic future awaits District 1 as it embarks on this exciting journey of transformation and development. We start with essential renovations, from upgrading roofs and asphalt to painting walls and transforming large spaces into functional units. But it’s not just about physical improvements—we engage with our tenants to learn what they need and reach out to the community to understand what they want to see. As the work progresses, we welcome new tenants and organize events like markets, fairs, small business gatherings, rare car expos, holiday celebrations, and more. Today, I had the distinct opportunity to speak to a packed house of downtown stakeholders brought together by the Edmonton Downtown Business Association (Canada). Thank you to their indefatigable CEO Puneeta McBryan for the robust conversation, and also to my fellow panelists, David Downey, Executive Director of the International Downtown Association, and Trent Edwards, COO of Brookfield Properties Residential for sharing your invaluable perspectives! During our deep dive, several themes emerged: 👉 While there are challenges, Edmonton has wonderful gems of authenticity upon which to draw inspiration and differentiation. Places like Fu’s Repair Shop (a truly unparalleled restaurant experience...the ambience, the nostalgia, the music...I could go on!) and Rice Howard Way offer pockets of genuine character that set Edmonton apart from its suburban counterparts. These areas, rich in local culture, are essential to building a vibrant, distinct downtown that attracts businesses and visitors from both near and far. 👉 With institutions like the Art Gallery, Citadel Theatre, and the Centre for Music, Edmonton has solid cultural assets. Enhancing accessibility and creating a continuous, walkable experience around these destinations can transform them into even more powerful downtown anchors. 👉 The Urgency of Downtown Housing: For a truly thriving core, more downtown residents are essential. Every effort must be made to expand housing options, from office-to-resi conversions, selective redevelopment, and new builds must all be on the table. 👉 The Need for Prolonged Strategic Public-Private Collaboration: From building credibility with low-cost, high-impact initiatives to pilot programs that test new ideas, collaboration between the city, developers, and investors can lead to actionable change. I was thrilled to participate in this conversation on behalf of Streetsense. With bold leadership and a collective consensus for action, there is real momentum behind Edmonton’s vision for its future! #ImaginingDowntown #DowntownYEG #UrbanRevitalization #CityBuilding #SustainableCities #EdmontonFuture #placemaking #placestrategy
Imagining Downtown: A Global Comparison, presented by Brookfield Properties is underway! The incredible Larisa Ortiz has the room compelled. She's reminding us that downtown is our brand, it's our calling card. For those on the outside looking into the city, if things aren't working downtown, it says something about how everything else is working. One of the biggest messages is getting more residents downtown. Right now there are 13,000 people living in Downtown proper and we need to find a way to at least double that number! We can't wait to keep this conversation going, so stay tuned!
