I recently looked at the importance and ways of cultivating a culture of care founded on a sense of belonging and compassion and wrote an article about my findings. I believe that secure and meaningful relationships are paramount in education especially as we have this unique privilege to ‘touch’ minds and hearts of the next generation and have the ability to work on this endeavour with other people with strong values and purpose to make a difference. What I found however is that the relationship between teachers and students are only an effect of those values and purpose shown by an individual teacher. The power in educational leadership is to ensure that all the members of the school community, including teachers and support staff, as we tend to possibly rightly concentrate on students, feels the sense of belonging and is treated with respect, compassion and trust. Importantly the focus should start from understanding those values and creating a shared set which is deeply acknowledged and appreciated by all members of the school community, underpinning everything we do. This will lay the foundation to build a sustainable culture of care based on a sense of belonging encouraging growth and innovation within the setting. Acknowledgement of the expert knowledge of teachers, allowing them to upvote professional learning in the way that they are not scared of making mistakes but treating them as their teacher. Having confidence to notice those research observations, both positive and those requiring improvement, and discussing them with others without fear of judgement. In consequence can allow careful reflection and taking responsibility on implementation of ideas and adjusting accordingly to improve their own practice and deepen their knowledge and understanding, leading therefore to being the best version of themselves filled with passion ready to ignite the hearts and minds of those we care for- our students.
