📢 Call for Expressions of Interest: Interior Public Art @ Lawrence Heights Community Recreation Centre, City of Toronto 📢 The City of Toronto invites practicing artists and artist teams to submit Expression of Interest to the first stage of a public art competition for the new Lawrence Heights Community Recreation Centre. The interior public artwork will be permanently installed in one of two potential locations within the ground floor of the CRC. The commissioned artwork could be a two-dimensional artwork installed on the wall surface, a three-dimensional artwork installed onto the wall surface, or a three-dimensional artwork suspended from the ceiling. The successful artist/team will develop and implement a community engagement plan as part of the commission. This is a two-stage competition open to all artists, those with a connection to Lawrence Heights will be favoured. In stage one, the selection panel will identify a shortlist of a maximum of four artists. EOIs will be evaluated based on artistic excellence, related experience, connection between their practice and the project, and appropriateness for the community and site. The shortlisted artists will be invited to submit a conceptual design proposal. Shortlisted artists will be paid a fee of $2,500 for this stage. *Unpopular Opinion* Low-budget is not a constraint for creativity. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. It encourages you to think, innovate, and go beyond the ordinary. But, today, low-budget projects have become synonymous with low-quality materials, lack of creativity, and poor construction quality. And, that is absolutely unfair. Because even if you spend a fortune on a project, it can still be a “not-so-good design”. On the contrary, low-budget projects can be more functional, aesthetic, and able to stand the test of time. So, BUDGET is not as much a constraint as it is a PARAMETER. Just like how climate, terrain, site neighbourhood, and plot size are design parameters; so is the budget. And the first step towards embracing this approach is bringing about a shift in the mindset. As designers, the onus is on us to find solutions that are economical, not cheap. The best way to find such solutions is to: + dig into our vernacular design styles, + explore sustainable design techniques, + and resort to technology for gaining efficiency. THIS IS NOT AN EXCITING IMAGE* | How real-time rendering reduces cost? (*or is it somehow?) Using easily available tools, such as Twinmotion from Unreal Engine as shown in this image, we can reduce change costs in the design and on site at later stages. After a couple of days getting my [sore] feet back under the desk this week, it has been a welcome break to be off in the virtual world adjusting façade options for a new home build in Essex. Beneath the external skin is the high performing structure we would always recommend as the first investment but on the outside, you can start being a little more playful. In this case, an afternoon flying around the model and adjusting cladding sizes, alignments, colours and materials has felt really quite rewarding. This image is a screeshot part way through. It isn't the end result. Nor does that matter. It is a snapshot of the 'working out' that goes into the design process for those of you who may not be aware. It is a bit like GCSE maths again, just with fewer pages of working out and more sketches and images!
