It's World Homeless Day today. Women's Community Shelters CEO Annabelle Daniel OAM shares this message: Women’s Community Shelters recognises that domestic and family violence is the leading cause of homelessness for women and their dependent children. It is vital to recognise that in a housing affordability crisis, women may choose to stay in abusive relationships if they cannot find somewhere safe, secure and affordable to go. Women’s Community Shelters has grown our shelter network bed nights by 30% in the last twelve months, but the percentage of clients we have been unable to assist has grown by 92% in the same period. Providing shelter through crisis, transitional and long-term housing prevents more women becoming homeless. We need to invest in ‘whole of society’ solutions to prevent more women becoming homeless this year and into the future. #WorldHomelessDay #homelessness #DVawareness #DVprevention

This year's theme is: "Homelessness Action Now" Did you know that FDV is the main cause of homelessness for women in Australia? Our programs and services support women and children escaping FDV. This week, we'll be posting FDV homelessness stats to raise awareness and provide suggestions for community support. How will you recognise Homelessness Week 2024? 💛 #homelessnessweek #homelessness #homelessnessawareness #homelessnessprevention #FamilyandDomesticViolence #fdv #raiseAwareness #support #supportwomenandchildren #hw2024

As we continue reflecting on our impact in 2023-2024, we'd like to share some key highlights across our family violence and homelessness support programs. In Victoria, domestic and family violence is the single largest driver of homelessness for women. More than half of the people we supported in the past year (61%) told us it was the main reason for seeking assistance from Juno - up from 44% in the previous year. Our small but mighty team continues to provide trauma-informed and person-centred support, in the face of increasingly unaffordable housing and cost-of-living pressures. Your support helps make this possible. Download our 2023-2024 Annual Report to learn more about our impact: https://loom.ly/ZKk18B0 #annualreport #familyviolence #homelessness #impact

We work with many people who are facing homelessness as a direct result of domestic violence. Many of these are women who find themselves with nowhere to go after fleeing their homes, often in fear for their lives. Mixed-gender hostels or accommodations can be a daunting prospect for the victims of domestic violence. For many, the streets can feel like a safer option. Women-only services like the one discussed in the article provide a real lifeline, somewhere where victims of domestic violence can breathe, re-calibrate and figure out their next move. It isn't easy to get an accurate picture of just how many people are facing homelessness, as many people stay hidden from sight and support. What we do know, however, is that reported incidents of domestic violence increase over the Christmas period. The hope is that projects like this may result in more people getting the vital support they need. #DomesticViolence #Women #Homelessness

Supporting Vulnerable Families Helping those in need this winter ☃️❄️☃️ "Over the twenty years that I’ve worked on Shelter’s emergency helpline, I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve picked up the phone to a parent who’s terrified that they and their families will be forced out onto the streets. Things weren’t always this bad. It used to be unusual to hear from people in well-paid jobs struggling with their rent or facing homelessness and use of foodbanks was rarely reported. Now, both are widespread and every second call we receive at Shelter is from someone at crisis point - a large chunk of these are families with children. In fact, this winter, a devastating record of 161,000 children will spend Christmas homeless in temporary accommodation. The problem is that for decades we’ve lost more social homes than we’ve built. Throw in a pandemic, a cost of living crisis and sky-high rents, and we now see record levels of people facing homelessness."
