My 2024 Ins & Outs as a Project Coordinator in the community development sector Over the past four months, I've been settling into my new role and for the first time, I have been working on a project from implementation. It has made me realise all the missed opportunities to learn new skills (and practice my resilience) when you don't step into an established project or one already in progress. So, I thought I'd share a few things I have learnt along the way and how it has helped frame what I am bringing with me into 2024, and what I am leaving behind... Ins: 🌟 Authentic Relationships Authenticity is so important to me. The past four months have only further affirmed for me the importance of authentic relationships. Authentic relationships take time, but authentic relationships lend themselves to genuine conversations and actions. And genuine conversations and actions drive change. 🙌 Giving back This sector has given me so much, both personally and professionally. This year I am committing to giving back through volunteering. My current project has a strong foundation in social connection initiatives and this has reinvigorated a passion of mine for volunteering. In 2024, I intend to spend more time giving back. 🎓 Focusing on continuous learning The last four months have been such a rich learning experience! I am surrounded by colleagues who challenge and expand my thinking constantly, fueling my desire for knowledge even further. Enrolling in post-grad seemed an obvious next step for me and I am excited delve deeper into all things Human Services this year. And, the outs: 🔑 One-size-fits-all engagement strategies A one-size-fits-all approach to community engagement never works and is definitely out! Being flexible enough to adapt a strategy to meet the needs of each community is so important, and this year I really want to honour that. 🧠 Siloed community development practice Community development practice doesn’t happen within one team or business area alone. No one knows everything and siloing your project or practice doesn't benefit anyone. Collaborate, and then collaborate some more. You don't know, what you don't know. Time to brainstorm together! 🗣 Ignoring the voice of lived experience Not including the voice of lived experience in community development is absolutely out! The voice of lived experience in project design is crucial for meaningful community development, ignoring it is a missed opportunity.

I’ve been at Houseful for just over a month now and I have to say my instincts were right. Let me talk through why. 📍Every single person I’ve met (and I do mean every one)has been open, supportive and truly caring about my experiance as a new starter to the business. As someone who has come in to do a one year contract role you can sometimes feel like a second thought but not here. You’re included immediately. 📍The office environment is incredible, it’s open, bright, cheerful. The amount of options on breakfast and drinks is incredible and genuinely they think about their team especially on warm days. 📍Flexible working is truly flexible. With a hybrid working model and the ability to set your own hours around core working times shows they understand how life is now. 📍Healthy high performance is a thing. Emphasis on Healthy. Their expectations as a market leader in the industry is high but they make sure not to encourage burnout in fact it’s the opposite. They make sure you feel supported and trained to be able to deliver on those expectations. 📍I have never worked with a people team as focused on their teams as I have at houseful. Words like inclusion, diversity, flexibility, equality aren’t just buzzwords. They are actions you can see being put into effect every day and are always working to do better 📍Finally community. They encourage everyone to have a voice in their business to make things better and are open with everyone. From monthly open halls with each business unit, to charity fundraising/partnering being such an incredible impact. They care about their community inside and out. I genuinely could not be more impressed and more grateful to be a part of Houseful.

Building and fostering connections is crucial for mental, emotional, and even physical well-being. Here are some practical suggestions on how to reclaim a sense of community and connection: Prioritize Relationships: Make a conscious effort to prioritize relationships in your life. Dedicate time to spend with family, friends, and loved ones regularly. Actively listen and engage in meaningful conversations to strengthen emotional bonds. Join Community Groups: Participate in local clubs, groups, or organizations that align with your interests. This could include sports clubs, book clubs, hobby groups, or volunteer organizations. Online communities and forums can also be valuable for connecting with like-minded individuals. Attend Events: Attend community events, gatherings, or festivals. This can provide opportunities to meet new people and establish connections. Check local bulletin boards, community centers, or online event platforms for upcoming activities. Volunteer: Volunteering is a great way to contribute to your community while meeting new people. It fosters a sense of purpose and connection. Look for local volunteer opportunities or initiatives that resonate with your values. Utilize Technology Mindfully: While technology can contribute to loneliness, it can also facilitate connections. Use social media and online platforms to stay in touch with friends and family. Balance virtual interactions with face-to-face connections to ensure a more fulfilling sense of community. Create Shared Rituals: Establishing routines or rituals with friends and family can create a sense of belonging. This could be a weekly dinner, a monthly game night, or other shared activities. Celebrate birthdays, holidays, and achievements together to reinforce a sense of community. Community Spaces: Support and engage with local community spaces, such as parks, libraries, or community centers. These areas often host events or provide spaces for casual interactions. Participate in or organize neighborhood clean-ups, gardening projects, or other communal activities. Reach Out: If you sense someone is experiencing loneliness, reach out to them. Simple gestures like a phone call, a text, or an invitation to join an activity can make a significant difference. Promote Inclusivity: Foster an inclusive environment where everyone feels welcome and valued. This helps build a sense of community that embraces diversity and different perspectives. Educate and Advocate: Raise awareness about the impact of loneliness on mental health and well-being. Advocate for community-building initiatives and policies that prioritize social connection. Remember that building a sense of community takes time and effort, but the benefits are well worth it. By taking these steps, you contribute not only to your own well-being but also to the collective health of your community.

One thing I love about working for Human Capital Concepts is our volunteer days - whether that is as a group or solo, to spend time with an organization I am passionate about fills my cup. Oh and did I mention matching donations, encouraging philanthropy? Are you offering time to your employees during work hours to serve your community and causesimportantto your team members? "An excellent first step to promoting employee volunteerism is understanding what the barriers are because then you can tailor efforts to overcome those specifically. Examples of common obstacles to getting employees to participate in corporate volunteer programs include: Time constraints: Employees often already feel overwhelmed with their workloads, family commitments, and obligations in their personal lives. You want to make it as easy as possible for employees to balance their work responsibilities with volunteering. Lack of awareness or interest: Employees may need to be made aware of volunteer opportunities, or if you have a current volunteer program, they might feel they need to be more passionate about the causes that it includes. Focus on publicizing your volunteer program and also helping employees get involved in things that are aligned with their interests. Asking for feedback and input is helpful here. Perception of inconvenience: There may be a misconception about volunteering that it's just one more inconvenience, especially if it requires travel or getting involved in something outside an individual’s comfort zone. Make volunteering convenient for employees. Some of the ways to do this are discussed below, such as offering a couple of days a year for paid volunteer time." #volunteerdaysoff #companyculture #valuesmatter #servantleadership #boardpositions

Today, I got to do something I’m truly proud of—the launch of the Doing Good Program at Atlas. The Doing Good Program is not just about giving back; it's about you. It provides opportunities for you to make a difference at the global, regional, and individual levels in ways that resonate with you. It's about fostering connections with your colleagues, expanding your networks, and making a more frequent impact in your communities. It’s part of our wellness strategy because we believe that giving back and volunteering directly contribute to your well-being. It’s also the right thing to do, which is why we simply formalized the program and ensured that there was a policy for equitable distribution and space for participation. Workplace volunteerism is way up, and that’s not just companies participating in programs; it’s the people participating. According to Benevity’s report, there has been a 57% year-over-year increase. And it makes perfect sense to me. Connection and a sense of purpose are fundamental for people—when you spend the bulk of your time at work, you need to find some of it in the workplace, too. It’s an investment in people that pays off in multitudes. https://lnkd.in/ekTvKUcq #Volunteerism #WorkplaceVolunteerism #GlobalVolunteerMonth #Atlas
