I spoke to The Times last week about Meta’s recent decision to minimize political and “social issue” content. The move will make it harder for people on both sides of the aisle to be exposed to diverse views and objective reporting. This is especially concerning given that paid political content is still going to be accepted on the platform. For example, the Trump campaign is set to spend hundreds of millions designed to further promote its viewpoints and those of the people they’re targeting. I can also see this exacerbating the bias in favor of candidates running for office who have the biggest marketing budget - on either side of the political spectrum. At the same time, it’s going to be harder for individuals to participate in healthy public discourse and take part in the grassroots action often necessary to combat many of the social ills in the U.K. and around the world - the facilitation of which is the most important use case for social platforms like Instagram.
