Today’s hot take courtesy of Newsweek! I spoke to them over the weekend around the American ban on TikTok - a move I am completely against. Not only do I think TikTok users will not simply funnel back into Instagram, but if the forced sale doesn’t go through, we’ll see a serious negative impact on creators (many of whom are women) and small businesses across America. If you haven’t personally tried to build a community online, it’s easy to assume an individual could simply move an audience from one platform to another, but that’s simply not the case - for reasons too extensive to try to cover in this post! One of the the most significant implications of the ban is that Meta will have a monopoly on how Americans communicate online. That is something we should all be extremely concerned about, especially given that they have recently made it more difficult for political and “social issue” based conversations to be seen on their platform. Right now, TikTok is pretty much the only large scale platform where those conversations aren’t suppressed or lost in a mire of toxicity like on X. There are up and coming alternatives like my own social media app Communia, which has even more inclusive content moderation policies, but ultimately no social network can fully replicate what makes another platform work, nor should that be our focus. Read the article to check out the thoughts that made it in, and shout out to Viktor Mayer-Schoenberger + Ahad Khan whose comments in the article I appreciated in particular! #tiktokban #socialmedia #socialnetwork #consumertech

In my opinion, it is very unlikely that TikTok will go away, even if this bill passes. TikTok is highly profitable and American companies / investment groups will jump at the chance to purchase the app.
