We were grateful to be in attendance at the Social Discovery Insights conference last week with some very cool apps on a mission to forge friendship and connectivity. ❤️ It's the online dating industry’s friendly cousin and its primary objective isn’t necessarily romantic partnership, but rather facilitating community among like-minded people. Some of our favorite apps to watch out for? 👀 Gofrendly, Djungo, Communia and Lex, to name a few! Like online dating, social discovery has its trust and safety challenges, and these founders are thinking critically about how to protect their most important asset: the user. 🛡 Here are protections that were discussed: 👉 User verification is becoming table stakes for weeding out fake accounts and scammers. Paid-only models create friction for bad actors, which is a good thing. 👉 Artificial intelligence and keyword lists are used to filter out violative images and text, and the industry is grappling with how to leverage gen AI to turbo-charge existing efforts. 👉 Apps are still very much reliant upon manual checks to provide a second or third layer of defense.
