The Top-Ranked Heart Hospitals in the Great Plains Region: Among the top 50 rated U.S. hospitals for adult cardiology care in 23-24, four were based in the seven-state Great Plains region. This included the Mayo Clinic, the 3rd highest-rated heart hospital in the country. The Top-Ranked Heart Hospitals in the Southeast: In the most recent (23-24) U.S. News & World Report survey of American hospitals, 5 Southeastern hospitals ranked among the 50 best U.S. hospitals for adult heart care. They include Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Duke University Medical Center, and Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, FL. In the 23-24 ratings, just under 800 hospitals were appraised for their proficiency in providing adult heart care. This analysis scored hospitals on assorted metrics related to the outcomes of their heart patients, the scope of their cardiology programs and services, and the level of recognition earned by these hospitals within the cardiology community. Ultrasound is amazing! Researchers found that by using Ultrasound instead of traditional X-ray to diagnose fractures in pediatric forearms: * There was no difference in detecting important fractures. * They were able to reduce the amount of time patients were in the ED. * Increase patient satisfaction * No unnecessary radiation exposure. ⭐ I am thrilled to announce the publication of the first article of my PhD-journey! 📰 The article, accepted this spring, is now officially out and available at the Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia, and can be read here: https://lnkd.in/dHt73bD9 (Open Access)! 📚 In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we assess the impact of cardiac surgery-associated acute kidney injury (AKI) on the development of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in patients without prior kidney dysfunction.   🔎 Our findings reveal that postoperative AKI increases the odds of CKD by more than fivefold! Additionally, CKD occurred in 24% of patients on average across studies!   ❗ CKD poses a significant challenge for this patient group, as it not only increases the risk of hospital admissions, kidney failure, and death, but also the risk of new cardiovascular events in an already vulnerable population.   💡 It is crucial to gain more knowledge on CKD following cardiac surgery to better identify high-risk patients and improve management strategies!   A huge thank you to my co-authors for their excellent collaboration and invaluable scientific discussions! 🗞️ It seems to be a good idea to schedule a visit with the primary care physician (PCP) after an emergency procedure. However, due to the current shortage and saturation of PCPs, implementing this may prove to be difficult... JAMA Surgery 2023: Primary Care Physician Follow-Up and 30-Day Readmission After Emergency General Surgery Admissions Source: https://lnkd.in/e4xzEiwG The editorial: Attentive care is vital to favorable outcomes in medicine. This is particularly important for the surgical patient, for whom preoperative preparation, good inpatient care, and home postoperative recovery support are essential for optimal outcomes. In the management of many types of medical conditions, such as pneumonia, heart failure, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, the role of the primary care physician (PCP) in the follow-up care of a patient after hospital discharge has been shown to prevent readmissions to hospitals. In this issue of JAMA Surgery, Moneme et al demonstrate that PCP follow-up for patients admitted for general surgery emergencies is associated with a 79% reduced odds of hospital readmission. They show that patients with significant comorbidities particularly benefit from the PCP follow-up. These data would push for scheduling PCP follow-ups as part of routine discharge planning for patients admitted for emergency surgical services.
