This inclement weather season, check out the OurCalling Homeless Services app by OurTechnology. It can greatly help those on the streets nationwide to find resources in this trying time and help bolster your community's response to homelessness. Download the app here: https://lnkd.in/e6-4yPf6 If a resource is missing from the app, like a temporary warming shelter, you can suggest it in the app. If this could help your city or region's response to homelessness, we would love to partner with you. Email info@ourtechnology.co or fill out the form on our website and we'll get back to you ASAP! By the way, if you're in the Dallas, TX area, the OurCalling and Austin Street Center teams began running a warming shelter this afternoon (Friday at 3 pm). Any reports or requests for help in the app will dispatch a local team to assist those in need. Stay warm, and love your neighbor. #homelessness #homelessnessawareness #homelesssupport #communityempowerment

Why is Set To Thrive important to our vulnerable children? Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is a psychological theory that categorizes human needs into a five-tier pyramid. At the base are the physiological needs, including essentials like food, water, clothes, and shelter. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs shows the critical need of Set To Thrive in our community. Set To Thrive’s mission is to provide children experiencing foster care and homelessness with new essential items (clothing, shoes, hygiene products, and more) to bring comfort and confidence during a vulnerable time. We are proud to be able to partner with other organizations in our community that work to meet all the needs of our youth and get them to a place where they can be comfortable, confident, and thrive. Thank you Bombas, Project Glimmer, One Warm Coat, Bloc Bags for partnering with Set To Thrive. We are always looking for corporate partners to help us make an even bigger impact. Let’s make an impact together for our local children experiencing foster care and homelessness. #communityengagement #fostercareawareness #homelessnessawareness #contracosta #alamedacounty #trivalley

This animation is a handy guide for parents and teachers, jam-packed with good advice on how to chat with kids about a pretty tough topic - homelessness. It is all about encouraging our youngsters to understand, empathize, and be aware of the world around them. First up, it dives into what homelessness really means, breaking it down into kid-friendly language. It covers the main reasons why people might find themselves without a home, like losing a job, the sky-high cost of housing, and health problems. We're also here to bust some myths - homelessness can happen to anyone, regardless of who they are or where they come from. Next, it tackle the big question - how do you even begin to discuss homelessness with children? There are some great tips on keeping the conversation real without freaking them out or making things too complicated. Honesty and appropriate answers to those tricky questions kids always seem to have, helping them see homelessness from a realistic and kind-hearted point of view. There are also some cool ideas on how you and your kids can help make a difference. This might be volunteering at a local shelter, or joining in with events to spread the word about homelessness. Show kids that every little bit counts, and that they can help make the world a little bit better. This animation is all about opening up the conversation, understanding, and showing a little kindness towards the issue of homelessness - something that's often misunderstood and judged unfairly.

MetLife Stadium, the largest stadium in the NFL, has a capacity of 82,500 fans. In contrast, the most recent U.S. homelessness census conducted in 2023 revealed that over 653,000 individuals were experiencing homelessness. This staggering statistic indicates that we could fill MetLife Stadium eight times with the number of people currently facing homelessness in our country. 😱 🏟 As we enjoy Thursday night football or watch the big game on Sunday, let us take a moment to reflect on this pressing social issue and consider participating in the upcoming walk to raise awareness and support for those experiencing homelessness. 🏈 Join us in multiple cities across the country on Super Bowl Sunday, February 9, 2025, as we walk together towards a future without homelessness. Let us demonstrate our compassion and commitment to caring for our unhoused neighbors. 📅 📃 Source: Ballpark Blueprints and National Alliance to End Homelessness #morecommonthanyouthink #endhomelessness #dontwalkby #winterwalk #walkwithus #endhomelessness #endthestigma #metlifestadium

Did you know that cities nationwide engage in a homeless count every year? I recently joined the City of Los Angeles's annual count, scanning our community with volunteers to identify individuals experiencing homelessness. It was a late-night endeavor, counting tents, RVs, and people living in cars. Our experience shed light on the importance of these counts. Beyond providing housing, we aim to be part of the solution. In 2023, the count in LA reached 40,000, highlighting a growing issue. Accurate counts are crucial to addressing homelessness and finding practical solutions for our neighbors in need. Together, let's make a difference. #LACommunity #VolunteerLA #HomelessnessCountLA

Title: Safe Havens: Solution to Overnight Parking for Families Experiencing Homelessness In cities across the nation, the struggle for safe and secure overnight parking is a harsh reality for many families experiencing homelessness. However, a novel solution is emerging: Safe Havens. These overnight parking spaces provide more than just a spot for vehicles to rest; they offer access to vital resources that can make a significant difference in the lives of those in need. For just $10, families can park their vehicles in designated spots from sunset to sunrise, ensuring a secure place to sleep. But what sets Safe Havens apart is the array of resources available. Imagine having access to a laundromat to wash clothes, showers to freshen up, and a hearty breakfast to start the day right. These amenities not only provide comfort but also restore dignity to those facing homelessness. Moreover, Safe Havens serve a dual purpose by allowing individuals who commute for work to park overnight safely. This not only benefits those experiencing homelessness but also supports the broader community by reducing the strain on limited parking resources during the day. By offering a holistic approach to overnight parking, Safe Havens have the potential to transform the lives of multiple families and individuals. They offer more than just a parking space; they offer hope, dignity, and a chance for a better tomorrow. It's time to expand this innovative solution and provide safe havens for all in need.

Just walked past a once-familiar face on the street, now without a home. It's a stark reminder that homelessness can touch anyone. 💔🏠 In the heart of our cities, the plight of the homeless often goes unnoticed. Yet, creating inclusive communities for them is not just a moral imperative but a societal one. Here are some thoughts on how we can all contribute: 1️⃣ Engage with empathy: Start by acknowledging the homeless as individuals with stories and dreams. A simple conversation can be the first step towards inclusivity. 2️⃣ Support local shelters: Volunteer or donate to shelters. They're not just a refuge but a stepping stone to stability. 🛌🍲 3️⃣ Advocate for affordable housing: Engage with policymakers. Affordable housing is key to preventing homelessness. 🏘️🗝️ 4️⃣ Employment opportunities: Encourage local businesses to offer employment to those ready to re-enter the workforce. A job can be more than an income; it's a new beginning. 💼💪 5️⃣ Education and training: Support initiatives that provide skills training. Empowerment through education can pave the way for independence. 📚🎓 6️⃣ Mental health support: Address the psychological aspect. Mental health services can be life-changing for those struggling on the streets. 🧠💚 Let's not just walk by. Let's stop, reflect, and act. Share your ideas and let's brainstorm ways to build a world where everyone has a place to call home. 🌍🤝 #Homelessness #CommunityInclusion #SocialChange #vetrorecruitment #vetro

Check out this post from our co-founder, on the use of tiny homes. Right now, we build them one at a time, but a whole community? It'll happen one day!
My dream is to build a community like this. A great article from The New York Times regarding tiny homes, and their use in building a community to house the homeless. If this is your dream too, let's chat!
Can a Big Village Full of Tiny Homes Ease Homelessness in Austin?

I really wish it wasn't behind a paywall, but this interactive media piece from the New York Times featuring the voices of Americans struggling with homelessness is so powerful, it deserves to be shared anyway. Definitely worth using up one of your limited free articles a month to read it if you are not a subscriber. Homelessness is on the rise nationally and here in CNY. After many years of wanting to get involved, I finally had the chance to participate in our local Housing & Homeless Coalition's annual point-in-time count last month. It is a boots-on-the-ground census of people without shelter for the night and the data collected is used to direct homeless funding and programming. Onondaga & Cayuga counties' counts revealed a 75% increase from the previous year; Oswego county's showed a whopping 400% increase in people without shelter that cold night in January compared to 2023 (link in comments). But we know that the count only tells part of the story. What the NYT piece helps illustrate is both the human side of this major social issue as well as the experiences of people who are less visibly homeless: living in cars, on friend's couches, in motels. Many people experiencing homelessness are in the workforce but cannot afford to live in the communities that rely upon their labor to function. Homelessness is a complicated, painful issue but engaging with it, learning more, and getting personally involved have made me less pessimistic, not more so. The passion and dedication of the people and agencies working to turn the tide on homelessness is infectious. Educating ourselves is the first step in aiding their fight. #socialdeterminantsofhealth #homelessness #housingpolicy
